Welcome to Canon Events, a weekly feature where I’ll explore some of the most shocking and memorable moments in comic book history—times when our favorite heroes and villains did something truly impactful, leaving a lasting impression on fans and the comics world.
As a huge Batman fan, it’s always been tricky figuring out what really counts as his core story. I mean, you can’t talk about Batman without mentioning the tragedy of his parents – that’s what made him. And even after becoming the Dark Knight, he just kept facing loss, which definitely changed him and made him tougher. But through it all, he was always the guy Gotham – and his family – could depend on, no matter what. At least, that’s how it always seemed… until the ‘Venom’ storyline happened, and things really shifted.
I always felt a little uneasy around Batman, you know? He was so…perfect. But everything changed with the ‘Venom’ storyline in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight. Dennis O’Neil and the art team – Trevor von Eeden, Russell Braun, and a few others – really shook things up. They actually let Batman fail at his biggest challenge, and it completely broke him. He spiraled into this really dark place, questioning everything, and it almost cost him his whole career. He nearly lost the people closest to him, the ones who always had his back. But weirdly enough, that whole mess ended up making him a better hero. It even paved the way for some awesome new characters and stories that I still love today.
The Bat Stared into the Darkness And Faltered
This was one of the first major challenges Batman faced as a crimefighter, and it began like so many other cases: tracking down a kidnapped person. Using his detective skills, he followed the trail of Sissy Porter, only to find her trapped in a crumbling, flooded sewer. Without hesitation, Batman plunged into the tunnel and discovered the girl chained to a chair, surrounded by rising water. He began desperately clearing away rocks and debris, comforting the frightened Sissy with promises he hoped he could keep. But he soon came across a massive concrete block, estimated to weigh around 640 pounds, mostly submerged in the water. Despite his incredible strength, he couldn’t budge the obstacle, and Sissy tragically drowned before his eyes.
The unsuccessful rescue attempt sparked a relentless, multi-day pursuit of those responsible, pushing Batman to his physical and emotional limits. After four days without sleep and Batman’s insistence on ignoring a shoulder injury sustained while trying to move a heavy boulder following Sissy’s abduction, Alfred offered his resignation. However, he remained by Batman’s side when the attempt to capture the kidnappers went badly. Exploiting Batman’s exhaustion and injury, the kidnappers almost defeated him, but they were called off by their mysterious boss, allowing Alfred to get Batman medical attention. Ultimately, Batman’s inability to save Sissy Porter and bring her captors to justice sent him spiraling into a darker state of mind.
Batman arrived at Randolph Porter’s home with the devastating news of his daughter, Sissy’s, drowning. Surprisingly, Porter barely reacted, completely absorbed in his work. He revealed he manufactured designer drugs, and his latest creation, Venom, could push the human body beyond its natural limits. Porter even implied Batman could have saved Sissy if he’d been using Venom. Batman initially refused, but after experiencing another physical failure, he went back to Porter and accepted his offer.
Several warning signs appeared before Randolph Porter misused the new drug, Venom – both with Porter himself and with the drug’s mysterious properties. Batman even realized he should be more worried about what he’d taken, but his immediate focus was elsewhere. A clear sign that something was wrong emerged after his first dose. He effortlessly lifted a weight that previously caused him pain, and easily defeated the kidnappers. But as he looked down at one of them through a broken window, Batman did something unusual: he let out a chilling laugh. This happened early in the story, hinting at a dramatic and somewhat predictable series of reveals that would ultimately change everything.
Batman’s Oldest Allies Ultimately Gave Him the Strength
Batman was losing control, increasingly influenced by the Venom. He recklessly ventured out in public, dressed casually with a hat, and a disturbing smile hinted at his intentions, unnerving the criminals he usually fought. Alfred confronted him, pointing out that Batman himself would be disgusted by Bruce Wayne’s behavior. This was one of the last times Alfred served as Bruce’s butler before leaving. Soon, Batman became addicted to the pills, which clouded his judgment and made him more violent.
Randolph Porter cleverly used Batman, manipulating him into eliminating rivals of his criminal associates. Batman even started relying on Porter and his friend, General Slaycroft, for more of the performance-enhancing pills, and they gave him dangerous missions. One of these missions, however, ultimately helped Batman realize he was being controlled. When Slaycroft used his connections to silence someone, Porter ordered Batman to kill Commissioner Gordon. Fortunately, Batman’s strong bond with Gordon allowed him to resist the manipulation, warn the Commissioner, and break free from his dependence on the pills. He then spent a month in the Batcave detoxing, while Porter and Slaycroft fled to Santa Prisca, a place that would become important in future events.
Man, things got really dark when I tracked those guys to Santa Prisca. They were still experimenting on Slaycroft’s son, and they even grabbed Alfred! I ended up stuck on the island for a whole month, basically having to deal with my own issues before I could focus on the mission. Turns out, Porter had a seriously messed up test for me. He locked me in a room that was slowly filling with water, with a door that was way too heavy to lift. His solution? Take three days’ worth of his new Venom. I argued I could do it with proper training and food, and surprisingly, he agreed. He gave me the gear, thinking I’d drown when the room flooded. But he underestimated me! I used my brain and the equipment he gave me to build something that helped me open the door just in time. Total mind game, but I pulled it off.
After bringing Porter to justice – with a final act of retribution delivered by Slaycroft’s son – Batman returned to Gotham. Porter died of an overdose while attempting to escape prison, but his criminal network lived on. The experience changed Batman, giving him a new perspective and empathy for the addicts he’d previously confronted with violence. He also strengthened his trust in his allies, who had been crucial in freeing him from both Venom’s control and his own inner demons.
The Best Batman Stories Challenge His Resolve
Batman is famous for defeating incredible villains and saving the world, and those stories are fantastic. But his best stories often happen when he’s pushed to his absolute limit – when he faces challenges that truly stump him, or finds himself in situations he can’t simply solve with a plan. It’s when he’s vulnerable and tested that we see the true extent of the Dark Knight’s strength.
The story of “Venom” is so effective because it forces Batman to doubt everything he’s worked for. He dedicated his life to becoming the ultimate physical specimen, but he realized that wasn’t enough when lives were on the line. Despite constantly risking his life to protect Gotham, he couldn’t overcome his limitations when it mattered most. This was deeply damaging, and it affected him more profoundly than any of his battles with supervillains. Like many people facing a crisis, he looked for a quick solution to fix everything. He justified this one compromise to his strict code as being for the greater good, but it quickly spiraled out of control and nearly consumed him.
Throughout his career, he didn’t fall when battling enemies; he struggled most when faced with problems he couldn’t easily solve. Reaching the limits of what he could do, and realizing his own vulnerability, was incredibly difficult for him. Readers interested in seeing these moments can explore stories like Batman: The Cult, Batman: Ego, and Legends of the Dark Knight tales such as “Gothic” and “Prey.” The impact of the “Venom” storyline on Batman continued to be felt long after its initial release.
“Venom” is an Incredible Tale That Inspired Even More
When Legends of the Dark Knight first started, most stories were independent and didn’t affect the main Batman storyline. But some were so well-received that future writers brought them back into the larger narrative. The story arc “Venom” was particularly influential, inspiring many characters and plotlines that are still used today. In fact, the Venom drug itself is the longest-lasting element created from that story. It played a key role in the origin of characters like Bane, who first appeared in a separate story before famously challenging Batman. That original Bane story is even being adapted into an animated movie, proving how much it continues to shape the Batman universe.
The drug Venom is central to the ongoing Absolute Batman story, significantly increasing Bane’s power. It’s also dramatically changed both Batman and the Joker, sparking a lot of discussion among fans. Interestingly, a similar performance-enhancing substance appeared in the 2022 film The Batman, where Batman used an injection to boost his strength during the fight with the Riddler’s forces. This could hint at the upcoming The Batman: Part II adapting elements of the “Venom” comic storyline, bringing the full story – not just the idea of strength enhancement – to the big screen for the first time.
Batman has faced incredibly difficult and deeply scarring experiences, far beyond what most heroes even imagine. These events have fundamentally shaped who he is and determined his path, making him a highly respected figure in the DC Universe. Despite his heroic stature, it’s easy to overlook his humanity. The story “Venom” brutally reminded him – and fans – of that fact, leaving a lasting impact.
