Nigel Bates, a popular character on EastEnders played by Paul Bradley, recently appeared in court. He unintentionally hit Jasmine Fisher and Gina Knight with his vehicle.
He sold his Morris Minor to Lauren Beale to pay for a trip to India with his wife, Julie. But before leaving, he took the car back for one final drive.
After being diagnosed with early-onset dementia, he forgot how to drive, causing an accident that seriously injured the girls.
When Julie unexpectedly found him in trouble, she immediately called for an ambulance and then helped him get home to avoid drawing attention. She got rid of his clothes and told Nigel he hadn’t done anything to be worried about.

The following day, he discovered his bloodied shoes had been thrown away, so he decided to confess everything to Jack Branning.
Okay, so Phil Mitchell is back, and let me tell you, he was furious with Julie. He really laid into her, accusing her of messing up badly. It seems he’s hoping his lawyer, Ritchie Scott, can somehow fix things for him – he’s clearly in a tight spot and needs a legal lifeline!
Nigel was anxious before the hearing because his lucky tie was missing. Sadly, Julie had sent it to the dry cleaners, which Nigel took as a sign of bad luck.
He found the man standing by Arthur’s Bench, and it brought back memories of everyone who had planned to be at the memorial’s unveiling.

The two then headed, with Phil, to the magistrate’s court.
Ritchie learned that prosecutors wouldn’t be charging Nigel with the crime, deciding he wasn’t mentally capable of understanding the charges. Julie and Phil were relieved, seeing this as a positive outcome, unaware that Nigel had actually heard everything they said.
Nigel was deeply upset by his worsening memory and felt he deserved to be punished for what he’d done, so he went back to Albert Square.
