Everyone enjoys a trip down memory lane, and for football fans who grew up in the 90s, few things spark those memories quite like 90s football and the classic Pro Evolution Soccer game.
Once a strong competitor to FIFA – and arguably even better in its prime – PES (now known as eFootball) isn’t what it used to be. It’s lost much of its appeal since the days when players like Castolo and Adriano were famous for their incredibly powerful shots.
Although modern football is often considered higher quality, people still frequently express nostalgia for the Premier League’s past, fondly remembering players like Dion Dublin before they moved on to other careers, such as his current role presenting daytime television shows about homes.
If you’ve been agreeing with everything so far, you’ll be happy to hear that a new mod is bringing the classic feel of PES ’99 and 90s football back to life!
A new update for the PC version of PES 2021 lets players experience the classic 1998/99 season, featuring all the famous teams from that time.
The game’s developers recently shared a look at their updated version of the FA Carling Premiership on Twitter. The preview featured classic players like Dwight Yorke and Alan Shearer scoring goals, younger versions of famous managers such as Fergie and Wenger, and David Beckham with a truly questionable haircut.
This mod aims to fully immerse players in the experience by recreating not just old player data, but also everything around the game – including player appearances, classic kits, stadiums, and even the TV-style graphics. It’s a complete retro revival!
This mod adds a lot of detail, even including old advertising signs around the pitch, featuring brands that no longer exist, like Northern Rock and Yellow Pages.
Although most of the attention is on the English Premiership, we’ve also included highlights from other leagues like Serie A and La Liga, plus footage from the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, for those who want to remember players like Ronaldo, George Weah, and Roberto Baggio.
We don’t have a confirmed release date yet, but the project is currently planned to launch in December 2025. You can follow the PES ’99 Twitter account for frequent updates.
For now, you’ll have to enjoy discovering the exciting young players in FC 26 and FM26. It’s amazing to think many of them weren’t even alive when Dennis Bergkamp stopped playing – that really makes you feel the passage of time!
