A fresh animated Batman series premiered today on Amazon Prime Video. While often called the Dark Knight, Batman is a character who’s been reimagined many times, with each version offering a new perspective. Just this year, we saw an Aztec-inspired Batman in Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires. And now, another distinct take on the hero is here.
Bat-Fam is a funny animated series created by Mike Roth and Jase Ricci, and it continues the story from the 2023 film Merry Little Batman. Yonas Kibreab voices Damian Wayne, Bruce Wayne’s son, who’s determined to become a hero like his dad. Luke Wilson plays Batman, but with a more lighthearted approach, as he adjusts to balancing fatherhood with crimefighting.
Bat-Fam is a Very Different Take on the Dark Knight
The opening sequence of Bat-Fam immediately signals a fresh approach to the Batman story. While Damian Wayne in the comics is a driven teenager struggling with the expectations of both the Batman legacy and his family’s past, this version is quite different. Bat-Fam retains the core of Damian’s character but presents him as a more relatable child. This allows younger audiences to easily connect with him and imagine themselves experiencing the excitement of living in Gotham City and adventuring with Batman and the Bat-Family.
The series Bat-Fam introduces Haley Tju as Claire Selton, formerly the supervillain Volcano. She’s been given a new, younger body, making her appear as a 12-year-old. While Volcano is a known character from both the DC animated universe and the comics, this is the first time she’s been a central figure. The show creates a fun tension between Volcano and Damian Wayne, as Damian is thrilled at the possibility of a sister, while Volcano worries she needs to earn Batman’s approval to stay at Wayne Manor. Things are further complicated by the ghostly presence of Ra’s al Ghul (played by Michael Benyaer), who is determined to torment Batman.
Bat-Fam offers a new and interesting perspective on the world of Batman and his closest partners, and it’s definitely worth watching. All ten episodes are currently streaming on Prime Video.
