Despite some initial online debate about the voice actors, The Super Mario Bros. Movie became a huge box office hit, earning over $1.36 billion worldwide. This success was a significant comeback for Nintendo in theaters, following the disappointing 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie. The film’s popularity has led to more Nintendo adaptations, including a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie already in production and talk of an animated Donkey Kong film. Unsurprisingly, a sequel, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, is also officially happening, promising to introduce even more characters from the games to the big screen.
As a huge cinema fan, I was really surprised where I got my first peek at Yoshi in the new Super Mario Bros. movie! It turns out listings for a new Pillsbury cookie dough – seriously! – accidentally showed off the character’s design on the packaging. The box for the ‘Ready-to-Bake Yoshi Egg Sugar Cookie Dough’ has Mario and Yoshi right on the front, giving us our first official look. It’s a fun little payoff for those who stuck around after the credits of the first film, since that’s where they hinted Yoshi was coming!

The cookie dough box has another surprise on the back: a maze puzzle featuring Rosalina’s Comet Observatory from the Super Mario Galaxy games. While Rosalina’s appearance makes sense given the movie’s title, a hidden detail in the maze is more interesting. One of the maze’s dead ends shows a picture of Bowser Jr., hinting that he’ll appear in the next movie, as this is official merchandise tied to the film.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Is Nodding at the Franchise’s Most Underrated Game

The way Bowser Jr. is shown on the cookie dough packaging is a nod to his beginnings in video games. He’s drawn with dark, messy ink, which references his first appearance in the GameCube game Super Mario Sunshine. In that game, Bowser Jr. pretends to be “Shadow Mario” and covers the island with gooey graffiti using a magic paintbrush. This paintbrush, which can create portals and even bring creatures to life, quickly became a defining part of his character. He’s used it as a weapon in several sports games, and it was also central to the story of the Bowser’s Fury expansion for Super Mario 3D World.
The way the movie’s trailers and posters show Bowser Jr. with this unique, inky look strongly suggests his magic paintbrush will be a key part of who he is in the film. This is a reference to the game Super Mario Sunshine, and it shows the movie isn’t only taking ideas from the Galaxy games, but is also pulling from other popular Mario games to develop its characters.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 3, 2026.
