Super Mario Creator Discusses Future of Franchise, Says Next Movie is “Going to be Fun”

As a huge Mario fan, I was so excited to read what Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario, had to say about what’s next for the franchise! He recently talked to a Japanese magazine about the amazing success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie – he was a producer on that, which is awesome – and gave a little update on the sequel. He didn’t share a ton of details, but he did say the next Super Mario Galaxy Movie is almost finished – that’s fantastic news! It’s great to hear things are moving along and we’ll get another Mario adventure soon.

As a huge Mario fan, it was so cool to hear Miyamoto-san talk about how The Super Mario Bros. Movie actually came together! He said it really took a team effort, with lots of people stepping up and collaborating. He was really focused on making sure everyone worked well together as a producer, and it sounds like it paid off – a lot of the team are already excited about working on whatever comes next! That’s a great sign, right? It makes me even more excited for the future!

The next movie takes place in space, as the title suggests, and that’s all I can reveal right now. We’re wrapping up production, and I’m really excited about how it’s coming together. I always say I’ll keep working on a project until I enjoy it, and that should give you an idea of how good I feel about this one! (laughs)

Later in the interview, Miyamoto discussed the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series and what the future holds for it. He shared memories of finishing Super Mario World and then taking on the challenge of creating Super Mario 64, which marked a move into 3D gameplay.

After beating Super Mario World, we really felt like we’d done everything we could with Mario in 2D. Then, when we started working on Super Mario 64 and moved into 3D, it honestly brought me right back to being a kid again – it was so nostalgic!

Recently, Miyamoto explained that his team helps ensure newer Mario games still feel like Mario – meaning they’re fun and easy for anyone to pick up and play. Although he’s not directly involved in developing the latest Mario games, Miyamoto makes sure to play each new release for at least thirty minutes.

These days, I work with a team that helps keep the world of Mario running, so I rely on them a lot. However, I still personally play the first half-hour of each new game and carefully check how it feels to make sure it truly captures the spirit of Mario.

He discussed the enduring popularity of Mario, pointing out its successful expansion into films and the fact that nearly every Nintendo console has featured a dedicated Mario game. While unsure how the next installment will appear on the Nintendo Switch 2, he expressed his hope to be in good health to celebrate the character’s 50th anniversary.

He explained that Mario has grown beyond video games to include theme parks and films, thanks to the dedication of many fans and collaborators, and he’s excited to see what happens next. Reflecting on the Switch, he believes they’ve fully explored the possibilities with Super Mario Odyssey. Traditionally, a new Mario game accompanied each new console launch, and he’s curious to see how the team will handle that expectation this time around. He jokingly added he might avoid thinking about it! Ultimately, he hopes to stay well enough to celebrate Mario‘s 50th anniversary.
