Last week, Sony launched its own game streaming service for the PlayStation Portal, directly competing with Xbox Cloud Gaming. Currently, only PlayStation Plus Premium members can use it. However, Portal owners can play hundreds of games from the Game Catalog, and even some games they already own, without needing to turn on their PlayStation 5 console.
The PlayStation Portal has significantly improved remote play since its release in 2023. Before the official launch of PS5 game streaming, Takuro Fushimi, a product management senior manager, shared that the Portal is now used more often than any other PlayStation device – even the PS5 itself.
Before the Portal was released, some people wondered if enough gamers would want it, since it’s a new type of device specifically designed for remote play. But, as Tech Radar Gaming reported, the community’s reaction has been incredibly positive.
Our research indicates that people who use the PlayStation Portal are more actively involved with PlayStation than those who don’t. The PlayStation Portal is now the preferred way to use Remote Play on PlayStation 5, exceeding the popularity of mobile devices, the PS5 console itself, and the PS4.
Fushimi explained that the device currently works best alongside a console, rather than as a separate gaming system, and people typically play for about two hours at a time. But with the recent launch of PS5 game streaming, that might evolve.
This update is designed to give PS5 players more ways to have fun, encourage more people to try PlayStation Portal and PlayStation Plus, and keep existing PS5 owners coming back for more.
It remains to be seen how effective it will be overall, but the ability to buy games and accept multiplayer invitations directly is a significant improvement. It makes you think Sony is planning for the future, possibly even for the PS6, which some believe will include a portable option.
