Scott Snyder Reveals All About DC K.O. Fight Month, Crazy Tag Teams, And The Absolute Universe’s Future (Exclusive)

Comic book fans love following their favorite characters’ adventures, but big events are especially thrilling. These events, which often involve team-ups and crossovers, draw in more readers and let us see unexpected interactions between characters.

Big, multi-part stories like those DC and Marvel pioneered really changed how comics were told. Since then, both companies have constantly tried to outdo each other to keep fans engaged. This has led DC to its current, massive storyline where they’re fighting to stop Darkseid from conquering everything. It’s an all-out brawl between DC’s heroes and villains to determine who’s the strongest.

It’s called DC K.O., and it’s a current Must-Read on a monthly basis.

Scott Snyder is the lead writer for the DC K.O. storyline, and other writers and artists are contributing to related stories. The events in November will lead into December’s “DC K.O. All Fight Month,” an eight-part series focusing on lesser-known competitors who will gain power through something called Omega Energy.

Take me inside the conversations about the pairings that you guys dreamed up. We’re starting to see some of them now, as we look ahead on the release calendar, of some of the A versus B. But was there one or two in particular where you were like, ‘Well, we have to see how this plays out if these two go against each other.’

A lot of details are still being kept under wraps. Even though we see the main matchups during Fight Month, there’s more going on within each issue than meets the eye.

So, in the current issue I’m working on – and I think it’s safe to say it’s all about tag teams – we’re bringing back some fallen characters to join forces. It’s gonna be wild! We’ve got a ton of unexpected stuff planned that’ll give characters second chances to really shine, and you’re going to see some faces you never expected show up. Seriously, get ready to say, ‘Whoa, what just happened?!’

We aimed for a Saturday morning cartoon vibe, but turned up to eleven. When you’re doing events like this – I learned this with the Metal series – you need three key things, if possible. First, a compelling story you’re passionate about. And while this event is wild and chaotic, inviting everyone into a crazy spectacle, it’s also a deeply personal story about Superman. ‘Metal’ focused on Batman, ‘Death Metal’ on Wonder Woman, and this story, co-created with Josh, is my take on Superman.

The core of the story is Superman facing a difficult choice: to win, he has to become the very thing he despises. But the reward is immense – the chance to control the entire universe with his loved ones, without any opposition. It explores whether he’d compromise his values for that power, and how other heroes and villains try to influence his decision.

In the next issue, Lex Luthor presents a compelling argument to Superman. He explains that he used to resent Superman for overshadowing humanity’s own ability to be heroic by constantly saving everyone. However, Luthor now believes Superman doesn’t do enough.

It feels like everyone expects you to solve all the world’s problems – to cure diseases, overthrow oppressive leaders, and generally make everything better. But you haven’t stepped up, and frankly, it seems like a lack of courage. I, however, am going to take action.

As a fan, one of the biggest things I was hoping for with this event was that it really showed what DC is about right now. And honestly, I think it delivers! With ‘Metal’, we were aiming for that classic, over-the-top fun you’d see in a Jack Kirby comic, especially since things had gotten so dark and serious for a while. We really wanted to shake things up and remind everyone how awesome comics can be.

We want our store to be a fun place for everyone, especially during the tournament! Come in, make your predictions, and enjoy the competition. We’ve got free brackets to help you participate. Whether you’re interested in huge crossover battles – like Joker versus Annabelle, or Vampirella against someone else, even Homelander taking on Superman – or if you prefer following the main storyline, or even revisiting Red Hood’s quest for revenge on the Joker from the Death in the Family storyline, we’ve got something for everyone. There’s a lot of exciting content to explore!

At its heart, this event is a celebration of everything that makes comics so enjoyable, inspiring, and unique. We want to show how comics can bring people together and offer something for everyone. Our main goal is to encourage people to visit and enjoy local comic book stores.

What I’m really excited about is how this event isn’t just a quick win for us. We want everything we do to actually improve the comics, to add something lasting. And this definitely does! We started teasing it at New York Comic Con with ‘Next Level,’ and it’s all about bringing fresh energy to the main DC line. We’ve got new books coming, including Lobo and Batwoman – seriously, we can’t wait for you all to see what we’ve got planned! It’s also about working with incredible creators and telling stories that fit within the overall DC Universe but are really approachable and focus on those fan-favorite characters who deserve more attention. The goal is to get people hyped and then give them amazing books when they head to the store – books that really deliver on those characters’ epic potential.

This event will have a positive and long-term impact on our ongoing comic book series, including Justice League. It will inject fresh energy into existing storylines, providing creators with new material and ideas they’ve been looking for to further enhance their work. While those books are already successful, this will give them even more momentum.

We have some exciting new Absolute edition books planned for release this spring, including Absolute Green Arrow and Absolute Catwoman. I keep expecting to hear that one of these projects is cancelled, but surprisingly, the response has been the opposite. Everyone internally has been incredibly supportive, offering helpful feedback and encouragement.
