Andy Samberg is reflecting on the loss of a beloved leader.
Over a year since the demise of actor Andre Braugher, best known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” alongside Andy’s character Jake Peralta, Andy continues to express heartfelt gratitude for the shared experiences during the span of eight seasons.
On Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast on July 8, Andy expressed agreement with her observation that his co-star appeared both composed and playful.
Andy expressed that he was truly an exceptional individual, incredibly moral, kind, amiable, and intelligent. We all adored him immensely. I sorely miss him.
As Andy explained, once the duo read together for their first scene, they clicked instantly.
Andy clarified that our collaboration started off seamlessly. It felt as if it were destined or meant to be, much like when you say, “Ah, this just feels right…” Initially, what we needed to discuss creatively was quite unique – he had doubts about his ability to perform comedy at the outset.
But Andre’s ability to take on more dramatic moments never ceased to amaze his fellow costars.
Time and again, we’d delve into heavier subjects on our show, and just like that, he’d flick a switch. It was as if I, being an ardent fan, would exclaim, “Oh my goodness, who is this enigmatic figure? His talent is unparalleled!” Yet, it wouldn’t be long before he’d slip into his Captain Holt persona, and that, dear readers, was the most hilarious moment on our screen.
Following Andre’s demise in December 2023, his fellow actors also honored their late leader. Chelsea Peretti expressed that she would miss his “sweet voice.
She expressed her gratitude on December 12th via Instagram for having shared this journey with you, stating that she had a front-row view of your antics. To her, you were not only amusing but also profound, like still waters running deep. She will always value our conversations, even when it meant standing in your doorway to prevent you from leaving, and the extraordinary chance to be your companion.
In wrapping up her message, the comedian paid tribute to her character by saying, “It feels strange that I too am mourning the impact Captain Holt had on Gina. I had been holding onto the hope and belief that we would cross paths once more. It’s unfortunate that this won’t happen now.
Terry Crews, my fellow actor, was equally stunned. He wrote on Instagram, “I can’t believe it! You’ve gone too soon.” Working alongside him for eight years, I had the privilege of knowing him, laughing with him, and witnessing his unique talent. This loss is painful. You departed us prematurely. You have left behind a wealth of knowledge that I will always cherish.
As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but express my profound sorrow for the loss your family is enduring. Your impact on my life will forever be immeasurable. Thank you for the wisdom you shared, the guidance you offered, the kindness you extended, and the friendship you bestowed upon me. You have shown me what it means to live a life filled with grace.
Moreover, FOX (previously responsible for airing Brooklyn Nine-Nine for its initial five seasons before it moved to NBC) expressed deep sorrow in a statement about the unexpected passing of their acquaintance and coworker.
The network’s December 12 statement recalled that Andre, a beloved figure in both film and television due to his memorable comedic and dramatic roles, will primarily be remembered for his immense kindness, generosity, and the profound influence he had on those around him – friends, family, and fans alike. To them, Andre was not just an actor, but the heart and soul of the Nine-Nine, forever their beloved captain.

Your advice will always stay with me, along with all the joyous moments we shared, which were made even more special by your infectious laughter. Your unwavering love and devotion towards your family is something I deeply admire. And whenever I ask for work flexibility to spend time with my loved ones, your memory will be there as a reminder. So many moments of our friendship will live on in my heart.
“I deeply love you. I’ll greatly miss hearing your sweet voice. Consider myself eternally fortunate to have embarked on such a journey with you, witnessing every moment from the front row. You were always so amusing to me, yet a symbol of profound depths beneath the surface. The times we conversed, especially when I lingered in your doorway, trying to delay your departure, remain precious. It was an incredible privilege to be your sidekick. Strangely, I find myself mourning not only for you but also for what Captain Holt represented to Gina. I had hoped and believed that we would meet again one day. It pains me deeply that this won’t happen.
I’m utterly shocked at how quickly you departed. It was a privilege to have known you, shared laughter with you, collaborated with you, and witnessed your exceptional talent for eight remarkable years. This pain is unbearable as you left us too soon. You imparted so much knowledge to me, and I will forever be grateful for the experience of knowing you. Thank you for your wisdom, guidance, kindness, and friendship. My deepest sympathies go out to your wife and family during this tough time. You have shown me what a life lived with purpose looks like. Rest In Peace, Andre. I hold you in the highest regard, my friend.
Andre’s life will be remembered through countless heartwarming tales. For the moment, though, my heart is with his wife Ami and their three sons, whom he adored and traveled back home from work every weekend to be with. We all acknowledge Andre as a remarkable actor, but what truly mattered most to him was his role as a husband and father, which he wore with immense pride. He frequently spoke of his sons and recognized how fortunate he was to have Ami by his side. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share eight years of our lives with him. Andre was dedicated and passionate about the things he cherished. His voice had a unique ability to ground even the most turbulent dialogue, and there’s a good chance you didn’t know that Andre could also sing beautifully, often serenading his colleagues with powerful bass vocals from his dressing room during lunch breaks. Initially, it was a bit surprising, but soon it made perfect sense because Andre was simply brimming with melodies, which is why he captivated the world. I already miss him dearly. Working alongside such an exceptional individual has been an immense privilege and blessing. Rest in peace, Captain Holt. With love, Porkchop.
“Andre. [heart emoji]”
“O Captain. My Captain.”
Extremely bright and uncommonly kind, he was also supportive, generous, and gifted beyond measure. There was so much more he had yet to share. I am heartbroken. He was someone I deeply cared for. The nine years I got to collaborate with him and simply be around him were a true privilege. My sincere sympathies are extended to his family.
Actors always get ready… Wishing warmth to Andre’s loved ones, as well as everyone who shared the privilege of collaborating with him. #Brooklyn99
I’m deeply saddened by the news of Andre Baugher’s demise. My thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time. Working alongside him on Brooklyn Nine-Nine remains a cherished part of my acting journey.
I’m very sad that Andre Baugher has passed away. I’m thinking about his family and friends. Working with him in Brooklyn Nine-Nine was one of the best experiences during my career.
Everyone working at FOX is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of our dear friend and coworker, the exceptionally gifted Andre Braugher. He will undoubtedly be remembered for his hilarious and moving performances in movies and TV shows, but more so for his warm heart, kindness, and the profound influence he had on everyone, including friends, family, and fans worldwide. Andre was the lifeblood of the Nine-Nine and will always be our Captain. Our thoughts and sincere sympathies go out to Andre’s loved ones during this difficult time.
During our work on the “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” pilot, I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Andre. He was an incredibly kind, considerate, and immensely gifted individual. The fascinating interplay between their contrasting acting styles initially puzzled us, but eventually, they began to subtly influence each other in a captivating way that formed the soul of the series.
I’m deeply saddened by the passing of Andre Braugher. During the early days of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he was always so kind and gracious to me. At my first event as someone else’s plus one, I felt self-conscious and chose to wander around alone, eventually finding myself at an empty card table. Andre noticed me there and took the time to join me when he didn’t have to. His gesture made me feel valued. I will always remember that kindness. I believe he showed this same warmth to many others. We have lost a remarkable person and a gifted actor. May his soul rest in peace.
