After working together in the 2022 hit Top Gun: Maverick, Tom Cruise has often been seen as a mentor to Glen Powell. But Powell’s new film, The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright, really shows just how much of an influence Cruise has had on him.
Powell steps into the role of Ben Richards, a character originally made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 movie. And, as you might expect, the film features a lot of impressive running scenes.
Powell once reached out to Tom Cruise for tips on how to appear comfortable while running on camera. Their conversation lasted over two hours and proved incredibly helpful.
The actor, known for his roles in ‘Twisters’ and ‘Anyone But You,’ shared that someone told him, ‘You really should film yourself running – you don’t move as smoothly as you imagine!’ He admitted, ‘They were totally right!’
He said, ‘Tom enjoyed the film, but I haven’t had a chance to discuss my running technique with him yet.’ He added that he really wants Tom to think his running is good and promised to follow up later.
Wright joked that Powell would end up like a contestant on Strictly Ballroom, holding up scorecards, which made Powell laugh.
Regardless of what he thought of the race itself, Tom Cruise was clearly impressed by Shelly-Ann Fraser-Powell’s performance and the film overall. He shared enthusiastic praise for the movie on social media after seeing it premiere in London last week.
He shared that he had a fantastic time at the movies with friends, writing, “You all were amazing, congrats! I laughed a lot, was really engaged, and definitely overdid it on the popcorn.”
This movie is the second film adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel, originally published under the name Richard Bachman. While another version starring Arnold Schwarzenegger exists, this new adaptation has a different feel and stays much closer to the original story. The Running Man will be released in UK cinemas on Wednesday, November 12th.
