With the Fantastic Four now officially part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, fans are more optimistic about the future of another beloved team: the X-Men. Disney’s purchase of 20th Century Fox in 2019 brought the rights to both the Fantastic Four and X-Men under the Marvel Studios banner. Since then, Marvel has been developing new projects to seamlessly integrate these rebooted teams into the MCU, and they’ve demonstrated they can handle these iconic superheroes well.
Adapting the Fantastic Four and the X-Men for the big screen has consistently been a challenge for Marvel. The X-Men’s complex history and large cast of characters make a faithful adaptation difficult, but the Fantastic Four have proven even trickier. While Fox struggled to get the Fantastic Four right, Marvel Studios, with Matt Shakman at the helm, finally succeeded. This success gives fans hope that Jake Schreier’s upcoming X-Men reboot within the Marvel Cinematic Universe will also be a hit.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps is the Best Fantastic Four Movie Ever

Roger Corman and Bernd Eichinger initially attempted a low-budget Fantastic Four movie in 1994, but it was never released. Later, 20th Century Fox partnered with Eichinger to create more ambitious adaptations of the superhero team. While Tim Story directed two Fantastic Four films, they now feel quite old-fashioned. The 2015 reboot directed by Josh Trank was widely considered a failure, meaning Fox struggled to successfully bring the Fantastic Four to the screen. Marvel Studios, however, has had more success with the franchise.
Directed by Matt Shakman, who also helmed WandaVision, The Fantastic Four: First Steps reimagines the classic team with a fresh take set in a retro-futuristic world reminiscent of the 1960s. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach brilliantly portray the Fantastic Four, bringing both humor and heartfelt emotion to their battle against the formidable Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson) and the Silver Surfer (played by Julia Garner). With its striking visuals, compelling score, straightforward story, strong character interactions, and ties to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, First Steps is widely considered the best adaptation of the iconic superhero team yet.
Fox Succeeded With the X-Men Where It Failed the Fantastic Four (Twice)

Fox struggled to make a good movie about the Fantastic Four, turning what is considered a beloved Marvel team into a laughingstock. However, they had more success with their series of films about mutants, particularly the X-Men. The X-Men franchise, now established as taking place on Earth 10005, lasted for twenty years and included thirteen movies and two TV shows that weren’t considered part of the main storyline. While not every installment was a hit, several were highly praised.
Films like X2: X-Men United, X-Men: First Class, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Logan, along with the two Deadpool movies, were major hits for Fox’s X-Men series. While movies such as X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Dark Phoenix, and The New Mutants didn’t perform as well, Fox still had a stronger track record with X-Men films than they did with the Fantastic Four. Despite their successes, the X-Men franchise could have been even better, which is why we’re excited to see these characters now being developed by Marvel Studios.
First Steps Makes Us Sure Marvel Studios Will Produce the Best X-Men Movies Yet

Now that Marvel Studios has successfully adapted the Fantastic Four with The Fantastic Four: First Steps, bringing the X-Men to life should be much easier. We’ve already gotten a taste of what’s possible: Professor X appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Deadpool & Wolverine introduced X-Men characters with personalities and costumes true to the comics, and The Marvels featured a great-looking Beast. The upcoming X-Men reboot in the MCU will likely build on these exciting developments.
We’re optimistic about the upcoming X-Men reboot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, especially with Thunderbolts director Jake Schreier at the helm. The new team will likely feature younger versions of the characters, allowing for significant development within the MCU. The Fantastic Four: First Steps successfully introduced Marvel’s First Family, and we anticipate a similar strong start for the X-Men when they’re reintroduced in Phase 7, potentially leading to appearances in future Avengers films like Doomsday and Secret Wars.
