4 Easy Ways Marvel’s New Ultimate Universe Could Continue

As a long-time Marvel reader, I have to say the Ultimate line was a real high point for the publisher recently. It all kicked off with titles like Ultimate Spider-Man and Ultimate X-Men, stemming from the Ultimate Invasion storyline where the Maker essentially built his own universe. These books immediately caught everyone’s attention, and we’ve since seen great runs on The Ultimates, Ultimate Wolverine, and even Ultimate Hawkeye. While sales weren’t always chart-topping, there was a definite buzz and energy around the line, and a lot of fans considered it the best thing Marvel was doing. Many of us assumed it would go on indefinitely, just like the original Ultimate Universe, so the recent announcement that it’s ending came as a real surprise.

The Ultimate comic book series was exceptional, and readers have complicated feelings about its conclusion. While many appreciate Marvel bringing the story to a close rather than letting it run on endlessly, others wished it would continue – and it could have been done fairly easily. Here are four simple ways Marvel could have kept the Ultimate Universe going.

4) The Maker Is a Servant of a Greater Power

After Earth-1610 was destroyed, The Maker built a new universe where he holds all the power. This fits with his role as Marvel’s biggest villain, but it raises a question: how did he actually do it? The Maker is incredibly intelligent, but creating a whole universe seems beyond even his capabilities without some kind of extra power boost or help from a being even more powerful than himself.

Perhaps the Maker isn’t the true villain, but someone’s pawn – a tool of a greater, cosmic force that created the Origin Boxes and gave them to him. After defeating him, the heroes would discover that he was merely a messenger for a much larger threat. This could involve the return of the Beyonders or Builders, or even a corrupted version of Eternity. To revitalize the series, a new creative team could launch the heroes on a quest to uncover who the Maker was truly working for.

3) The Maker Survives the Final Battle and Returns Later

In Ultimate Endgame, the heroes of the Ultimate Universe triumph over the Maker, but he escapes. They then begin rebuilding the world, aiming to create a future free from his direct threat, though always aware he could return. A year after the initial story concludes, Marvel announced the heroes’ return in new comics with new creative teams. These new stories show the heroes largely succeeding in their efforts to improve the world, until things mysteriously start to fall apart again. The tension builds, ultimately revealing that the Maker survived and is plotting to reclaim his universe.

2) Remake the Universe Without the Maker Using an Origin Box

The story of Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion involved Miles Morales traveling to the main Marvel universe to rescue his sister, who had obtained a card allowing travel between universes. The series concluded with the discovery of an “Origin Box,” which appeared to be central to how the villain known as the Maker created his own universe. If Ultimate Endgame saw the heroes defeat the Maker and find his Origin Box, they could use it to rebuild the universe, erasing the Maker and his harmful actions from history. This would allow all previous events to unfold as they did, but without the Maker’s negative influence. A few months later, the series could be relaunched with new creative teams (though Marvel might be able to retain artists like Peach Momoko and Deniz Camp), and benefit from a fresh start.

1) Just Relaunch the Universe

The easiest way to move forward is to simply continue the story. With the defeat of the Maker in Ultimate Endgame, the main villain is gone, leaving the door open for new adventures. The heroes can celebrate their win while still working to rebuild the world, and Marvel can reintroduce classic concepts in a fresh way – essentially rebooting the Ultimate Universe without a planned ending. A new creative team could take over, giving fans what they want: more stories with the characters they already enjoy. While it might seem strange for Marvel to undo the announced ending, most fans probably wouldn’t mind seeing the universe continue.
