Back in 2008, Ascaron released Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, a prequel to their well-regarded 2004 action RPG, Sacred. The sequel expanded on the original with even more content. Now, publisher THQ Nordic, who owns the Sacred franchise, has launched a remastered version of Sacred 2. Initial reports suggest there may be more Sacred games to come in the future.
What is Sacred 2 Remaster?

If you didn’t play the first Sacred game, you might not know Sacred 2. The original game took place 2,000 years before Sacred 2‘s story. Players could choose one of seven character classes and experience the game through either of two different campaigns, playing alone, with a friend locally, or online with others.
Sacred 2 shares a lot of similarities with games like Diablo 2, offering fast-paced action RPG combat. However, its storyline and character classes—such as the High Elf and Dryad—feel more akin to World of Warcraft. The game boasts a vast, open world with very little loading time and plenty of dungeons to discover.
The Sacred 2 Remaster largely stays true to the original game, but some features are missing. It’s unclear why the developers removed them, likely due to the fact that they were working with an unfinished game and didn’t have all the original files.
Honestly, the multiplayer in this Sacred 2 Remaster is pretty barebones. It’s only on PC, so forget about playing with a friend on the same couch. And the biggest bummer? No free-for-all or player-versus-player battles – you can only play through the campaign with someone else. They also took out trading, gave us fewer slots for our gear and skills, and just generally limited a lot of things that made the original fun. It’s a bit of a letdown, to be honest.
Fans will be happy to hear that this remastered version of the game has improved graphics, complete controller compatibility, and smoother combat. As a bonus, purchasing the remaster also includes a free copy of the original Sacred 2 Gold, so you can enjoy the classic version anytime. And there’s more to come – this remaster seems to be the first step in a revival of the Sacred series.
What’s The Future of Sacred?
THQ Nordic recently shared a behind-the-scenes look at the Sacred 2 Remaster, featuring Franz Stradal, a key creator of the original Sacred games. In the video, Stradal explained that this remaster isn’t the final step, but rather a fresh start. He hinted at exciting future plans for the world of Ancaria and many more stories to come.
Honestly, as of today, THQ Nordic and everyone involved haven’t really given us fans any solid hints about where the Sacred series is headed. I remember Keen Games made a third game that really shifted things towards a fast-paced, action-packed style. And before Sacred 3 even came out, Deep Silver released Sacred Citadel – it was a fun, side-scrolling beat ’em up designed to get everyone excited for the next main installment.
While THQ could potentially remake older titles, it doesn’t seem very probable. Since Frank Stradal wasn’t part of those original projects, he’ll likely focus on his own vision for the series’ future. If the Sacred 2 Remaster performs well, it’s more likely Stradal and his team will create a new Sacred 3 that stays true to the classic action RPG style. A complete remake of the original Sacred is also a possibility, though it would be a much larger undertaking. However, both of these are probably still a ways off.
The initial reviews for the Sacred 2 Remaster on Steam are largely negative. Players are reporting frequent bugs and crashes, and while these could be addressed with updates, it’s unclear if the developers will have enough time to fully fix the game. Given the popularity of the first two Sacred games, fans are hoping for a stable and improved version of Sacred 2 on current platforms, though its long-term prospects seem uncertain.
