Similar to Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2, Sony has revealed a new PlayStation 5 Digital Edition that will initially only be available in Japan. It will launch on November 21st for ¥55,000 (approximately $357) and is specifically designed for use with Japanese PlayStation Network (PSN) accounts and when the region setting is set to Japan.
At ¥72,980, the all-languages Digital Edition is a good value, especially considering the price has increased twice. However, it doesn’t include a Blu-ray player, and the 825 GB hard drive might fill up quickly. You can buy a Blu-ray drive separately if you need one.
Aside from a slightly updated design for the exterior and cover – which now has a matte finish – it’s very similar to the existing Digital Edition. You can pre-order it starting November 13th at 10 AM Japan Standard Time.
Sony recently surprised many by announcing a goal to sell 90 million PlayStation 5 consoles by the end of 2025. This move seems intended to help them reach that target, and may also be a way to avoid extra taxes on their products.
