20 Years On, DC Is Officially Delivering Homelander vs. Superman (& The Winner Won’t Be As Simple As You Think)

That’s right – Superman is facing off against Homelander, his most ruthless imitator! DC Comics recently surprised fans by announcing that their DC K.O. tournament would include fighters from completely different universes and franchises. Joining the battle are characters like Annabelle from The Conjuring, Sub-Zero from Mortal Kombat, and Samantha, the killer from Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees. And now we know Homelander from The Boys will be one of the opponents, going head-to-head with the Man of Steel.

If you haven’t been following it, DC K.O. is a tournament to decide the fate of the DC Universe, with 32 heroes and villains competing. Each win earns fighters more Omega Energy, and the ultimate winner will gain enough power to become a godlike being, rivaling Darkseid. Recently at NYCC, it was revealed that the fighters need more Omega Energy than exists within the DC Universe itself, so they’ll be traveling to alternate universes to battle new characters – promising some truly epic fights that fans will be discussing for a long time.

DC K.O. Will Officially See Superman and Homelander Fight

Scott Snyder recently chatted with CBR’s Heroes Journey podcast about his upcoming projects, including DC K.O. He talked about how much fun he’s having with the series and all the exciting things he has planned for fans. Snyder briefly revealed details about the crossover fights, mentioning a major issue featuring Joker versus Annabelle, and a showdown between Homelander and Superman. While we already knew Homelander would be involved, this confirms he’ll be directly battling Superman.

Even before it was official, most DC Comics fans agreed that a fight between Superman and Homelander should happen—and that Superman should win decisively. Superman is a classic hero, while Homelander represents everything comic book fans dislike about the idea of a villainous Superman. People really want to see the main bad guy from The Boys not just defeated, but completely humbled, especially given his disturbing, authoritarian tendencies.

A lot of people seem to think a fight between Superman and Homelander would be a quick win for Superman, but I’m not so sure. While Superman is definitely the stronger of the two, experience with comic book crossovers shows that writers usually try to create a fair fight. After all, nobody wants to read a battle that’s decided right away. It’s hard to tell a truly compelling story when everyone already knows who’s going to win.

How Can DC Comics Make This Fight Work?

People questioned the point of the tournament even before it started, especially with so many powerful competitors. But as we saw in DC K.O. #1, unexpected things happen – even heroes can fall. It’s also important to remember that Omega Energy, a dangerous force linked to control and injustice, fuels these battles. And considering Homelander’s nature, he’s naturally drawn to such a corrupting power.

This won’t be a straightforward fight between the standard versions of Superman and Homelander. The writer will likely give Homelander some extra power to make the fight more competitive, so Superman won’t instantly win. If you’re expecting Superman to simply knock Homelander out quickly, that’s probably not going to happen. Introducing a character like Homelander only to have him easily defeated wouldn’t be very satisfying, and I get why people would be disappointed by that.

Homelander is the opposite of Superman. Where Superman dedicates himself to helping people, Homelander simply doesn’t care. Given the rise of dangerous ideologies around the world, audiences want to see heroes stand up to villains like Homelander and defeat them. While it might seem counterintuitive, I believe DC Comics could actually tell a more compelling story by making Homelander an even more formidable opponent.

While it might be amusing to see Superman defeat Homelander with a single punch, like Batman taking down Guy Gardner, a better approach for DC would be to establish Homelander as a genuine challenge. This would not only create a more compelling fight, but also make Superman’s eventual win feel more impactful. A quick knockout is satisfying, but a struggle where Superman, as a beacon of hope and justice, overcomes Homelander’s ideology after a difficult battle is the kind of story Superman truly embodies.
