Disney’s classic animated movies are famous for their memorable supporting characters – from talking animals to objects that spring to life. These characters aren’t just there for laughs; they often become more important than the main heroes and heroines. They provide crucial support, help the audience connect with the story, and frequently end up being the most heartwarming part of the film.
These ten side characters are truly memorable and have won over both fans and critics, showing how important strong supporting characters are to a great story.
10) Flounder (The Little Mermaid)

Ariel’s best friend, Flounder, is a sweet and a little anxious fish, but he always puts aside his worries to support her goals. Though Ariel initially calls him a “guppy,” Flounder faithfully accompanies her on all of her adventures, both underwater and on land.
Flounder is Ariel’s most devoted friend and always tries to help her, even when things get difficult, like when she’s near Prince Eric’s castle. Despite being a bit anxious, he has a huge heart, making him a truly loyal and endearing companion – one of Disney’s best sidekicks!
9) Heihei (Moana)

Heihei is probably the most hilariously clueless sidekick Disney has ever created. This rooster is mostly interested in pecking at rocks, wandering into trouble, and somehow ending up in the water whenever Moana isn’t looking. His complete lack of self-preservation is how he winds up tagging along on Moana’s big adventure, making him a bit of a troublesome travel companion, and he never seems to realize he’s in danger.
Heihei constantly blunders into trouble, throwing a wrench into Moana and Maui’s quest and forcing them to save him. Though not very smart, he provides a welcome bit of comic relief and surprisingly helps Moana out on occasion with his silly, unpredictable behavior.
8) Lumière (Beauty and the Beast)

Lumière, a delightful butler magically transformed into a candelabra, is the lively and welcoming leader of the enchanted staff at Beast’s castle. He’s best known for his show-stopping performance of “Be Our Guest,” filled with energy and drama. Lumière helps brighten up the gloomy castle and encourages both the Beast and the other cursed characters to remember there’s still reason to be hopeful.
The film truly revolves around Lumière’s disregard for rules and authority, especially when it comes to Cogsworth. He’s deeply devoted to the Beast and the castle staff, always pushing the Beast to overcome the curse and never letting him forget his good heart. He also warmly welcomes Belle to the daunting castle, making her feel at home.
7) Mushu (Mulan)

The dragon who claims to be Mulan’s protector is surprisingly small – more like a lizard! His job is to awaken Mulan’s ancestors to keep her safe. But after accidentally breaking the statue of the ancestral dragon, Mushu decides to handle the task himself, even though he’s completely unprepared for the outside world.
Mushu is a funny and often unreliable advisor to Mulan, but he’s a great source of encouragement, especially when things get tough – like when she’s facing dangerous enemies. Eddie Murphy’s voice and Mushu’s quick wit make him a memorable and hilarious companion, helping Mulan stay positive as she deals with the harsh realities of war.
6) Timon and Pumbaa (The Lion King)

Timon and Pumbaa, a meerkat and warthog, famously showed Simba how to embrace a worry-free life with their Hakuna Matata philosophy. They took Simba in as a cub and helped him move past the painful memories of his father’s death, which he wrongly believed was his fault.
This duo is classic Disney comedy gold, consistently providing hilarious moments and often stealing the scene. More than just being funny, their unwavering love and acceptance of Simba create a strong, supportive family bond that helps him find the bravery to eventually take back his rightful place as king.
5) Dante (Coco)

Miguel’s loyal companion is a Xoloitzcuintli, a unique hairless dog breed from Mexico. Named Dante, he can see both the living and spirit worlds, and plays a crucial role in guiding Miguel through a risky and unpredictable adventure. Dante’s playful personality and love for food actually kick off the story, as his actions lead Miguel’s family to discover his hidden musical passion. Ultimately, his mischievous behavior is what reveals Dante’s true identity in the Land of the Dead.
Dante shows his feelings clearly through his big ears and tongue, letting Miguel know exactly what he’s thinking. He’s deeply loving and always wants to protect Miguel, making him a cherished companion on Miguel’s quest to learn about his family history.
4) Olaf (Frozen)

Olaf, the snowman brought to life by Elsa’s powers, is delightfully cheerful and has one big dream: to feel the warmth of summer! He’s a pure, innocent character who brings a touch of fun and surprisingly insightful thoughts on life, love, and the comfort of a good hug.
Olaf isn’t just a funny sidekick; he’s essential to Anna and Elsa reconnecting. Despite his cheerful nature, Olaf has a surprisingly thoughtful understanding of love and is willing to do anything for his friends. His warmth helps to heal emotional wounds and even thaw the physical cold around them.
3) Pascal (Tangled)

While trapped in the tower, Rapunzel’s best friend is a chameleon named Pascal, who can’t speak but always shows how he feels. He changes colors to reflect his mood and understands Rapunzel perfectly. With his big, expressive eyes, Pascal is like her conscience, always offering support and keeping her safe.
Though small in size, Pascal is incredibly brave, fearlessly standing up to Flynn Rider and protecting Rapunzel even in the most dangerous moments. Despite being unable to talk, his lively personality and emotional support are vital – he’s the one who truly inspires Rapunzel to pursue her dreams and leave the tower.
2) Dug (Up)

Dug is a sweet Golden Retriever with a special collar that lets everyone hear what he’s thinking – and he mostly thinks about squirrels and how much he loves his new friends, Carl and Russell. He truly represents the idea of a loyal companion, offering them unwavering support and affection throughout their journey to Paradise Falls.
Dug’s unwavering loyalty and instant affection for Carl represent a key moment for the grieving widower, reminding him of how to feel joy again. Dug shows that even a dog created for experiments can discover a fulfilling purpose: being a loving, if somewhat goofy, companion.
1) Gus Gus and Jaq (Cinderella)

Gus Gus and Jaq, along with their little group of friends, are central to the story of Cinderella. They’re incredibly loyal to her and the only family she has during a very lonely time. They’re always trying to sabotage the nasty schemes of her stepmother, Lady Tremaine, and her mean cat, Lucifer.
Gus Gus and Jaq are crucial helpers to Cinderella, able to talk, move around, and even perform tasks like stealing keys and sewing. This sweet, slightly clumsy mouse and his clever friend symbolize the strength and optimism that eventually help Cinderella find her freedom.
