February 13, 1997, is a hugely significant date in TV history. It’s the night Rachel and Ross from Friends had ‘the break’ – Rachel suggested they take a break from their relationship, and Ross then slept with someone else. The argument over whether Ross was technically cheating or allowed to see other people has continued for almost thirty years, and Jennifer Aniston recently brought it up again online, suggesting the debate will never truly be settled. It makes you wonder where she stands on the issue!
The question of whether or not Ross and Rachel were “on a break” was one that came up repeatedly throughout the remainder of the Friends’ 10 seasons — literally, David Schwimmer’s character even joked about it in the series finale. Time hasn’t done much to heal that divide amongst fans, either, and Jennifer Aniston provided proof of that recently when she reposted the following meme to Instagram Stories:

Jennifer Aniston clearly got a kick out of a funny welcome mat someone showed her. It asked visitors to share their opinion on whether Ross from Friends was actually unfaithful. It was a much simpler way to address the debate than the famously detailed letter she once wrote – a full 18 pages, front and back – arguing whether he should own up to his mistakes.
The picture shows an Amazon package placed on the “No” side of a choice, playfully referencing the famous “We were on a break!” scene from Friends. It seems the delivery person jokingly believes Ross was wrong in the argument. The person who posted the picture disagrees, implying they think Ross and Rachel were actually broken up when Ross brought another woman, Chloe, back to his apartment.
Jennifer Aniston recently saw a meme and thought it was funny, so she shared it. This has led people to wonder if she agrees with Ross about their famous “break” from the show Friends. It appears she does! During the 2021 Friends reunion, Aniston clearly stated that, yes, they were indeed on a break.

It’s a little unexpected that the actress seems to disagree with how her character acted, but it’s hard to argue with the show’s storyline. Rachel was the one who initially suggested they take a break, she told Monica they’d broken up on their anniversary, and even asked Ross if she could be his girlfriend again when she tried to get back together. It’s all pretty clear, really – the episode is literally called “The One Where Ross and Rachel Take a Break.”
Even with new information, it’s still okay to dislike Ross – many people still think he’s the worst, and that’s perfectly valid.
Jennifer Aniston previously claimed they were on a break, but she seemed to change her tune after the reunion. She shared a photo with a hat saying, “We were SO not on a break!” It’s surprising this argument is still debated after all this time.
It’s been 28 years since that controversial storyline aired – a whole new generation who weren’t even alive then now have strong opinions about it – and Friends fans probably won’t ever reach a consensus. If you’d like to revisit the events (and see how the fallout played out throughout the rest of the show), all 10 seasons are available on HBO Max.
