Xbox Game Pass Follow-Up to 2021 Hit Gets Delayed to 2026

As 2025 nears its end, several highly anticipated games have announced they won’t be released this year. After a period of quiet, Witchbrook has been delayed until 2026, and Grand Theft Auto 6 is now slated for release in fall 2026. Along with that news, Marvel 1943: Hydra also confirmed it’s been pushed back. Now, another eagerly awaited game originally planned for late 2025 has also been delayed, with a new release target of 2026.

The developers of the upcoming indie game Mixtape, Beethoven and Dinosaur – known for their 2021 hit The Artful Escape – announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the game will be released next year instead of 2025. Mixtape was planned to launch on Steam and as part of Xbox Game Pass on day one, but fans will now have to wait a little longer to experience this coming-of-age adventure.

Mixtape Gets Delayed to 2026 with Spot-On Announcement

The game Mixtape was first shown at the Xbox Games Showcase in summer 2024, with another trailer released at Summer Game Fest 2025. Because of this, fans have been eagerly anticipating this story-driven game about growing up. It follows a group of friends on their way to a party on the last night of high school. As the name suggests, music is a key part of the game, featuring tracks from popular artists like Iggy Pop, Joy Division, and Smashing Pumpkins. Players will be able to skateboard, explore abandoned theme parks, and more, all designed to capture what it feels like to be a teenager. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait a little longer, as Mixtape has been delayed.

It’s never fun when a game you’re excited about gets pushed back. Lots of players loved The Artful Escape, so many were really anticipating the next project from Beethoven and Dinosaur. Interestingly, even the announcement about the delay, and the apology that came with it, felt perfectly in line with the game’s unique style and personality.

During the creation of Artful Escape, our 3D artist, Mikey, crafted a remarkably detailed oven – a testament to his skill, right down to the knobs. That attention to detail is what defines Beethoven & Dinosaur. We focus on the finishing touches, the little things – we ‘put the knobs on.’ We’re nearly finished with Mixtape, just adding those final details. Expect it in 2026.

A recent post teased the game’s release with a fun animation of someone creating a mixtape. The post announced, “Mixtape is almost complete, we’re just putting the knobs on. 2026.” The tracklist shown in the animation includes songs with titles like “I’m Sorry,” “Patience,” and “You Can’t Hurry Love,” culminating in “Almost There.” However, the creators clarified that this isn’t a preview of the game’s soundtrack; it’s a playful “Delay Playlist” acknowledging the game is still in development.

Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Mixtape in 2026. This means we don’t know exactly when it will be available on PC, Xbox Game Pass, and PS5. While fans are understandably disappointed by the delay, they’re willing to wait to ensure the game is fully polished, especially as it’s the first new title from the creators of The Artful Escape.
