2025 Throwback Thriller Finally Lands a Streaming Premiere Date

For quite some time now, it’s been rare to find mid-budget mystery-thrillers playing in cinemas like the good old days of “The Fugitive” raking in almost $400 million at the box office and receiving a Best Picture nomination. However, there are still occasional gems reminiscent of those thrillers to be discovered. In fact, 2025 has already given us one such film. Following its successful $90 million run earlier this year, that classic-feeling mystery-thriller is now preparing for its streaming premiere.

On Wednesday morning, Hulu announced that the long-awaited series, “The Amateur,” will debut on their streaming platform this month. They shared that this production, produced by Disney-owned 20th Century Studios, will join the Hulu family on Thursday, July 17th.

As a follower, I hail from the creative mind of James Hawes, renowned for his work on Penny Dreadful and Black Mirror, and based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell. In this captivating tale, I find myself portrayed by Rami Malek, famously known for Mr. Robot. My character is a CIA cryptographer who, following the tragic death of my wife in a terrorist attack, resorts to blackmail to secure a field position. With minimal experience under my belt, I embark on a perilous journey to track down those responsible for her demise.

This kind of action-packed thriller, reminiscent of movies from the ’80s and ’90s, is not often seen in cinemas these days, making it a refreshing change for many fans. The film “The Amateur” received mixed criticism upon its initial release in April, accumulating approximately 61% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 2.9/5 rating on Letterboxd.

Apart from Malek, the film “The Amateur” features a stellar ensemble cast that includes Rachel Brosnahan, who played Superman’s love interest Lois Lane, Caitriona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, Julianne Nicholson, and Laurence Fishburne.
