Stephen King’s Only Time Travel Story Became an Underrated TV Series, And Now It’s Hard to Watch

Stephen King is best known for his horror writing, but he also explores science fiction and fantasy, often blending the two, as seen in his Dark Tower series. He’s touched on time travel in a few stories – The Jaunt briefly mentions it, and characters in The Dark Tower move through time – but his only novel truly centered around time travel is 11/22/63, published in 2011. This novel was also made into a series on Hulu, though recently fans received some disappointing news about it.

The Hulu original series 11/22/63 has been removed from the streaming service, making it harder to find and watch now.

11/22/63 Is One of Stephen King’s Most Underrated TV Shows

Stephen King’s novel, 11/22/63, explores a fascinating idea: what if someone could travel back in time to stop the assassination of President John F. Kennedy? The story delves into whether they should try, and what consequences that action might have on the present. Time travel in the book works in a unique way – the traveler always arrives at the same place, and while they experience time passing in the past, no time elapses in their original timeline. They simply return having aged as much as the time they spent away.

Al Temleton, a diner owner, originally attempted to travel back in time to prevent the assassination, but he’s now failing. He asks his friend, Jake Epping, a schoolteacher, to finish the job – to go back and stop the assassination, with the hope of creating a more positive and equitable present. However, as you might expect with time travel involved, things quickly become complicated.

The Hulu series 11/22/63, which began in 2016, stars Chris Cooper and James Franco. It follows the same story as the book: Jake travels back in time to prevent President Kennedy’s assassination. While he’s successful, the consequences aren’t what he expected. The eight-episode series was a hit for Hulu, staying true to the original story. It received positive reviews, earning an 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a Saturn Award for Best Television Presentation.

The novel itself is a strong work from Stephen King, especially considering it was written later in his career. The TV series adaptation was also well-received, largely due to the production quality led by Bridget Carpenter and the performances, particularly James Franco’s portrayal of Jake Epping. Unfortunately, the series is no longer widely available to watch.

How to Watch 11/22/63 on Streaming

It’s becoming increasingly common for streaming services to remove shows, and recently Hulu took down 11/22/63. This follows HBO Max’s decision to pull shows like Westworld, even though it had a dedicated following, making it unavailable to watch without purchasing or renting. Now, Hulu has done the same thing with this often-overlooked Stephen King series.

The Stephen King series 11/22/63 isn’t currently available on any streaming services. It was briefly on Plex, but it’s no longer there. Now, the only way to watch it is to buy or rent it digitally. You can find it for sale per episode on platforms like Amazon, Fandango-At-Home, and Apple TV. Fortunately, a DVD and Blu-ray version is still available, which might be a good option for those who want to own a favorite show and be able to watch it whenever they like, since streaming services often remove content unexpectedly.
