Valve’s recent hardware announcement is incredibly exciting, and could pose a real challenge to companies like Sony and Microsoft. However, the biggest question remains the price – we still don’t know how much the new Steam Deck or Steam Machine will cost, and there’s been no information about how it will be sold beyond improved availability.
However, Yazan Aldehayyat from Valve assured customers that the hardware would be affordably priced, offering a good value compared to building a PC with comparable capabilities.
According to an interview with IGN, the Steam Machine is expected to offer a competitive price and good value for PC gamers looking for similar performance. Affordability is a key reason Valve believes the Steam Machine is a smart choice for consumers right now.
We always considered affordability and ease of use when designing new hardware or features. It was a key priority for every decision we made.
To be a successful gaming PC for both desktop and living room use, it needs to attract a lot of different players. Because Steam is so popular and the Steam Deck has done well, Valve might be able to justify a higher price.
The Steam Machine is powered by a six-core AMD Zen 4 processor with 12 threads, reaching speeds up to 4.8 GHz, and includes 16 GB of DDR5 RAM. It also has a custom AMD RDNA3 graphics card with 8 GB of VRAM, capable of sustained speeds up to 2.45 GHz. The model with a 512 GB SSD is expected to be considerably more affordable than the one with a 2 TB SSD, though pricing hasn’t been announced yet.
The Steam Machine, Steam Frame and new Steam Controller all launch together in early 2026.
