The recent merger of Paramount and Skydance Media is a major shift in the entertainment world, and its effects are already being seen in the types of shows and movies the company is making. As the two companies combine, leaders are carefully examining all projects—both existing and planned—to cut costs and focus on projects that are most likely to be profitable. This is especially true for the television side of the business, where executives are working to reduce spending and deciding which shows on Paramount+ are worth continuing. As a result, two animated series based on popular franchises have been canceled.
Paramount+ has decided to cancel its animated revivals of both Dora the Explorer and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series, which started as a follow-up to the well-received 2023 film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, will finish with its current second season. Dora, a computer-animated update of the popular children’s show, was also canceled despite being renewed earlier this year. Both shows were made by Nickelodeon Animation Studios, which is now part of a larger division within the company due to recent restructuring.
Despite the show cancellations, viewers can still look forward to new episodes that have already been made. The second and last season of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will debut on Paramount+ in December and then air on Nicktoons next year. Season four of Dora is coming soon, with episodes later appearing on Nick Jr. A fifth and final season of Dora is also finished, but details about its release date and how to watch haven’t been announced yet.
Is There Hope for the Cancelled Shows?

Just because Paramount+ has decided to stop producing new seasons of Dora the Explorer and Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles doesn’t necessarily mean those shows are over. Paramount is now considering licensing its content – essentially selling the rights to stream them – to other services, even competitors. This is a growing trend in the streaming industry, as companies look for ways to make more money and reach more viewers. This new approach could allow both Dora and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to continue on a different platform.
The recent cancellation of Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles seems particularly misguided, given its strong performance and the franchise’s current popularity. The series has a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, meaning critics universally loved it. Plus, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is having a major comeback thanks to the success of Mutant Mayhem, which gave the entire property a modern update. With a Mutant Mayhem sequel already planned, another streaming service could benefit from picking up this critically acclaimed series and building on that momentum.
