Rockstar Games is known for being secretive and taking its time to polish games like Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. This often means fans don’t get what they’re hoping for – like additional content that gets cancelled for GTA 5, or, in the case of Red Dead Redemption 2, a long wait for a version specifically designed for newer gaming consoles.
Good news for fans! Rockstar Games is reportedly working on bringing the original Red Dead Redemption to modern consoles – Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC. A recent rating from the Entertainment Software Ratings Board confirms this, classifying the game as “M” for Mature 17+ – as expected for its mature themes and open-world Western setting.
Originally launched in 2010 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, Red Dead Redemption was recently re-released in 2023 for Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4, though the multiplayer features were removed. The game then came to PC last year with improved graphics options.
While a new version for current consoles would make sense, Red Dead Redemption 2 originally came out in 2018 for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One (and 2019 for PC) and hasn’t been updated since, even though it’s one of the best-selling games ever. There’s been talk of a re-release, but a rumored fall launch now seems unlikely.
