I just saw the first details about a really interesting project Adult Swim is doing! It’s called The Elephant, and it’s a special event bringing together some of the most talented creators from Cartoon Network. Adult Swim always does something fun for the holidays – think unexpected horror shorts and other surprises. This year, they’ve assembled a bunch of big names in animation for this one special, The Elephant, and they’ve given us a first look at what it’s all about.
I’m so excited about this new animated special called The Elephant! It was first revealed at the Annecy festival earlier this year, and it’s being made by some seriously amazing creators – Rebecca Sugar (who did Steven Universe and Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars), Ian Jones-Quartey (O.K. KO! Let’s Be Heroes), Pendleton Ward (Adventure Time), and Patrick McHale (Over the Garden Wall)! It’s going to premiere on Adult Swim on Friday, December 19th at 11:00 ET/PT, and the best part? It’s going to be completely ad-free! Check out a first look below – it’s going to be incredible!
What Is The Elephant?

A new animated special, The Elephant, is coming to Adult Swim on Friday, December 19th at 11:00 PM ET, and will be available to stream on HBO Max the following day. What makes this special unique is that it’s divided into three parts, each created by different animators who didn’t collaborate or even share what their segment was about. In fact, the creators themselves don’t know the full story – Sugar and Jones-Quartey worked on one section, while Ward and McHale each created their own independently.
Jack Pendarvis and Kent Osborne, known for their work on Adventure Time, are acting as creative guides for each part of the production. However, the way everything will come together into one cohesive story is still a mystery. This project feels particularly unique in the animation world, and it’s exciting that Adult Swim is taking such a big creative risk. Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer to see the final result.
Why Does The Elephant Exist?
Adult Swim’s Michael Ouweleen explained that each year, they aim to surprise their audience with something unexpected, and this year it’s ‘Adult Swim’s The Elephant.’ He emphasized that the real reward was the chance to collaborate with a talented team and support their ongoing creative relationship. He’s excited for viewers to see what they’ve created, calling it a unique and exciting project. Plus, fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the special.
On December 20th, Adult Swim will release a behind-the-scenes documentary called “Behind the Elephant,” followed by a repeat airing on TV and streaming on HBO Max. Because the project was so experimental – even the creators weren’t sure how it would turn out – it promises to be a fascinating release for animation enthusiasts.
