Brendan Fraser Reveals His Family’s Unconventional Holiday Tradition

Brendan Frazer is decking the halls—and more.

The Academy Award-winning actor, who has three sons – Griffin, 23, Holden, 21, and Leland, 19 – with his former wife, Afton Smith, recently shared that his family has a special and unusual tradition for decorating for the holidays.

Brendan shared with TopMob News that he’s excited for Thanksgiving, explaining that his family has a tradition of dressing up a rubber deer statue in their backyard.

Although her family has traditionally dressed in standard winter clothing, the 56-year-old woman intends to give the deer statue a more unique look this year with some unusual additions.

Brendan explained he’s making eyeballs out of halved ping pong balls. He also plans to use an old dental mold and place it in a deer’s mouth.

The actor will only be contributing decorations, not helping with the meal. He’s leaving the Thanksgiving cooking to someone else.

I’m only providing the location,” Brendan joked. “Everyone else needs to bring whatever we need.”

Brendan feels lucky to have people he can rely on. While researching for his new film, Rental Family—which tells the story of an American actor in Tokyo who pretends to be a family member or friend for hire—he realized many people don’t have that kind of support.

He explained that people need to feel a sense of purpose and satisfaction in their lives. Without that feeling, and without a strong sense of belonging – whether from the family you’re born into or the family you choose – it can negatively impact a large group of people.

Oh my gosh, everyone’s talking about Oscar noms for Hikari’s film, and Brendan – Brendan! – actually said it’s ‘fulfilling,’ which, like, YES! But he’s being so chill about it, saying we just have to see what happens. It’s killing me with anticipation, honestly! I’m already planning my acceptance speech for him!

The actor from Whale said they were happy the film was connecting with audiences. They explained that people seem to feel a sense of achievement from the movie, realizing they had the capacity for fulfillment even when they felt inadequate. It suggests that, deep down, they always had what they needed.

Rental Family opens in theaters on Nov. 21.
