A remastered version of a classic PlayStation 1 game from 1996 unexpectedly launched on the Nintendo Switch 2 through the eShop, costing $29.99. While we anticipated the game would arrive on the Switch 2, no official release date had been announced. This week, Revolution Software surprised everyone by releasing the port, nearly a year after its initial release on the standard Nintendo Switch.
Nintendo Switch 2 owners can now enjoy a remastered version of the classic adventure game, Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars – Reforged. The original Broken Sword: The Shadow of the Templars first launched on PC and Mac in 1996, and later on PlayStation 1. This marked the only time the game appeared on consoles in its initial form. As the first installment in the Broken Sword series, it was a well-regarded title, earning a score of 81 on GameRankings upon release. While it might not have completely revolutionized the point-and-click adventure genre, it was a significant release, particularly for console gamers.
What’s New
This remaster of the 1996 game improves the graphics with 4K visuals and offers enhanced audio. Otherwise, it’s the same beloved game. It’s a high-quality remaster, scoring 84 on Metacritic – even higher than the original game. Player reviews are even more enthusiastic. While there aren’t reviews on the Nintendo eShop, it has a 96% approval rating on Steam, earning it the highest possible rating of “Overwhelmingly Positive.”
Charles Cecil, founder and CEO of Revolution Software, expressed his excitement about the release of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars – Reforged on the Nintendo Switch 2. He believes the upgraded hardware significantly enhances the game, with the 4K graphics being particularly impressive. He also noted that the addition of full mouse support makes this version the most authentic way to play George and Nico’s original adventure.
If you’re not feeling nostalgic for this PlayStation 1 game, don’t worry – there are other options. Like many older consoles, the PS1 is seeing a lot of renewed interest. In fact, just recently, a PS1 game from 2001 that hasn’t been available for years is being re-released.
We’d love to hear your thoughts! Please leave a comment below, or join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum. And if this game was a favorite on the original PlayStation, will you be giving it a try on the Switch 2?
