Tomb Raider Developer Crystal Dynamics Laid Off Employees for the Third Time This Year

Crystal Dynamics, the studio behind the Tomb Raider series, recently cut about 30 jobs. This is the third round of layoffs at the company this year.

The company announced layoffs on LinkedIn as part of a broader restructuring. They reported that approximately 30 employees across different teams and projects were affected as they reorganize for future growth.

Okay, so the company said they let go of “just under thirty” people, but pretty much everyone reporting on it is saying it was around 30 employees. It’s a little vague, but that’s the gist of it.

Even though the amount may seem minor considering the studio’s overall budget, this latest cut suggests a concerning trend.

Crystal Dynamics has now had three rounds of layoffs this year. The studio let go of 17 employees back in March.

It was a tough summer for the studio. First, they announced they were scrapping the new Perfect Dark game in July, and then, just a month later in August, there were more layoffs. It really felt like a double blow as a fan.

Considering this pattern, the number of people under thirty becoming prominent feels more significant than a single instance. Some believe it’s a sign of a larger trend towards younger people taking on more responsibility.

What These Recurring Layoffs Might Mean for the Tomb Raider Franchise

Even though Crystal Dynamics recently had layoffs, they want to assure players that work on the new Tomb Raider game (which Amazon Games will publish) is continuing as planned.

This indicates that despite some teams or projects facing difficulties, the main franchise is still the most important focus.

In their post, Crystal Dynamics stated:

With changes happening in the gaming industry, we’ve had to make some difficult decisions. These changes will help us focus on developing our main Tomb Raider game and allow us to build a strong foundation for future games.

However, some experts warn that repeated layoffs can create problems throughout the industry. These include losing skilled workers, lowering employee morale, interrupting essential services, and causing project delays.

The studio’s owner, Embracer Group, also has bigger plans, such as investing in artificial intelligence and tools to improve how things are done.

Whether those efforts will offset the human cost of repeated layoffs remains an open question.

Crystal Dynamics isn’t a small, independent developer. They’re well-known for successfully bringing back the Tomb Raider series, and they used to be owned by Square Enix before being bought by Embracer Group.

The recent wave of layoffs shows that problems aren’t limited to individual game studios; the entire gaming industry is facing challenges.
