Russell T. Davies, the showrunner for Doctor Who, has announced when the new spin-off, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will be released. Though the collaboration between the BBC and Disney on Doctor Who may be finishing, this spin-off will serve as a final joint project. Featuring Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Alexander Devrient as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, along with some new faces, the series will follow UNIT as they battle the Sea Devils – an ancient race who once ruled the Earth.
Russell T. Davies, the current showrunner for Doctor Who, has announced the release dates on Instagram. The new series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will begin on Sunday, December 7th and conclude before Christmas on December 21st.
The BBC announced that the new series will first be shown in the U.K., with plans for a release in other countries around 2026.
The War Between the Land and the Sea Is Dropping at the Perfect Time
Now is a great time to release the Doctor Who spin-off. While it’s coming out during the holidays, it cleverly avoids going head-to-head with the popular show Stranger Things. The success of Stranger Things likely also explains why Disney is holding back on airing their own show until a better moment. The BBC usually focuses on holiday programming and wants the Doctor Who spin-off to be a key part of the Christmas season.
British viewers will have to wait a while for more Doctor Who. The current series, The War Between the Land and the Sea, will finish before Christmas, and the show won’t be back on screens until Christmas 2026. This is because the agreement between Disney and the BBC is ending, leaving the show’s long-term future uncertain. Russell T. Davies will write the next Christmas special, which will likely feature a surprising regeneration – seemingly turning the Doctor into a previous companion, Rose Tyler, played by Billie Piper. While details are scarce, the BBC has assured fans that Doctor Who will continue.
Only time will reveal what the future holds, as the Doctor famously said. But for now, fans of Doctor Who can enjoy a pleasant holiday season in the U.K.
