Rockstar Games is in a great position to release a remastered version of Red Dead Redemption 2. They have an incredibly strong collection of popular games, like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead, and fans are eager for updated versions of their classics. While some are hoping for a sequel to L.A. Noire, taking advantage of modern technology to better capture actor performances, many players are simply hoping to revisit some of Rockstar’s most beloved titles, even those that aren’t very old.
Despite being released only seven years ago, Red Dead Redemption 2 feels dated due to limitations of older console technology. The game runs at just 30 frames per second, even on powerful consoles like the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. While the PC version is the best way to experience Rockstar’s popular western, many players hoped for a current-gen console upgrade. Rumors of a Red Dead Redemption 2 remaster, potentially even for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, have been circulating all year, but as the year ends, no such upgrade has materialized.
Why Now Is the Time for a Red Dead Redemption 2 Remaster

This week, news broke that Red Dead Redemption is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and even mobile devices through Netflix. This was unexpected, considering the game was already ported to PS4 and the original Switch in 2023, and PS5 could already play it at 60 frames per second. However, Rockstar is now building a version specifically for current-generation consoles. The port was first discovered through an ESRB rating before the official announcement. While some fans hoped this meant a remastered collection of both Red Dead games was on the way, that isn’t happening.
Rockstar really needs to consider updating its Red Dead games. It would be fantastic to see both games visually improved and run more smoothly on newer consoles and PCs. A remaster could also add features like the Rockstar Editor, letting players easily record and edit their gameplay in Red Dead Redemption 2. Ultimately, having both John Marston and Arthur Morgan’s stories available in one package, running at a consistent 60 frames per second, would be ideal.
To make matters worse, the release of GTA 6 has been pushed back from May to November 2026, which has disappointed many fans. This creates a potential opening for Rockstar to release a remastered version of another popular game. Red Dead Redemption 2 is their second biggest hit, and they could likely attract players to buy it again with a modest upgrade.
It’s uncertain whether this will become a reality. Porting the game isn’t a quick process; it requires significant effort and is likely already underway if it’s going to happen. Rockstar has a history of collaborating with developers like Double Eleven for these kinds of projects. Continuing to use external support to offer fans something to enjoy while they wait for GTA 6 seems like a smart move. Ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see if it pans out, or if fans will continue to hope for Red Dead Redemption 2 on modern consoles.
