Nintendo Switch 2’s Software Update Has Seemingly Broken Compatibility With Third-Party Docks

After Nintendo updated the Switch 2, some users are reporting problems connecting the console to docks made by other companies. Several users on forums like Reddit and GameFAQs have discussed these new issues, as first noted by Kotaku.

One Reddit user reported that a non-official (cheap) dock for the Switch 2 stopped functioning after a recent system update. They believe the update didn’t affect the official dock, suggesting Nintendo likely didn’t intentionally change how the docking protocol works – otherwise, the official dock would have also received an update to maintain compatibility.

Another Reddit user reported that their docking station (made by a third party) stopped working immediately after today’s update. They tried completely restarting it, but that didn’t solve the problem.

YouTuber AustinJohnPlays recently tested third-party docks for the Nintendo Switch 2 and shared the results in a video. The tests confirmed earlier reports that these docks stop working correctly after the console receives the latest software update. Nintendo hasn’t officially responded to these findings yet.

Similar to the first Switch, the new Nintendo Switch 2 uses a special type of USB-C port that isn’t fully compatible with all accessories. This caused problems with docks made by other companies for the original Switch, and it appears to be happening again with the new model.

Nintendo’s recent Switch 2 update focused on improving the user interface, fixing bugs, and boosting stability. Interestingly, the patch notes didn’t mention any issues with compatibility for docks made by other companies, suggesting those accessories should still work as expected.

This update includes improvements to make your gaming experience better, such as preventing games from pausing when you’re using GameChat to talk with friends online. We’ve also added new options for GameChat, like the ability to turn off Chat Audio Panning. You can find a full list of changes in our detailed coverage of the update.

Nintendo is generally protective of its hardware. While they’ve sometimes worked with accessory manufacturers, officially licensing technology for things like docks and controllers, they’ve also quickly stopped supporting products not officially approved.

Despite some issues with accessories made by other companies, the Nintendo Switch 2 is proving to be a huge success. Nintendo’s president, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently shared that it’s selling better than any previous Nintendo console. He also noted that most – 84% – of those who bought the Switch 2 had previously owned the original Switch.

According to Furukawa, a large number of Nintendo Switch owners are upgrading to the Nintendo Switch 2, which is helping Nintendo keep its customers loyal across different versions of the console.
