After 20 years, Brendan Fraser is potentially returning to The Mummy franchise. Following the 2008 film The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, reports surfaced last week that a fourth Mummy movie is being planned, and Fraser, along with Rachel Weisz, is in discussions to reprise their roles.
Even though the new Mummy movie is still in the planning stages, artist Ricardo Ferllen has created a possible poster design. The artwork shows a giant pharaoh’s skull rising from the desert, with Brendan Fraser’s character, Rick O’Connell, climbing it to enter through an eye socket. You can see the design below.
Brendan Fraser first played Rick O’Connell in 1999, reuniting with Rachel Weisz as Evelyn in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. Both films were directed by Stephen Sommers. Weisz didn’t reprise her role for The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, and Maria Bello took her place.
I’m really excited to hear that Blumhouse is giving The Mummy another shot! The 2017 reboot with Tom Cruise just didn’t hit the mark, but I have a lot of faith in Lee Cronin, who did a fantastic job with Evil Dead Rise. It sounds like this new movie, coming in April 2026, will be a completely fresh take, not connected to any of the previous versions, and that’s exactly what I’m hoping for!
Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz are reportedly discussing a return for another Mummy movie at Universal Pictures, suggesting more films could be on the way. The project is said to be directed by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, known as Radio Silence, who previously directed the Scream films from 2022 and 2023.
Brendan Fraser is joining the cast of a new Mummy film, continuing a remarkable comeback in his career. After a relatively quiet period, Fraser had a major resurgence in 2022, winning an Academy Award for his role in The Whale. He followed that success with appearances in Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) and Brothers (2024), and is slated to star in the highly-anticipated Rental Family, which comes out November 21st.
With Rachel Weisz potentially returning to the Mummy films, it seems likely the next movie won’t follow the storyline of ‘Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,’ which featured the characters’ son, Alex. Reportedly, Weisz didn’t return for that previous film because she wasn’t happy with the script, and a new movie could take the franchise in a fresh direction.
Whether or not a new Mummy movie will happen with Radio Silence directing is still uncertain. However, with two of the original actors returning and the directors having successfully revived other long-running series, it definitely has a good chance of succeeding. The movie’s poster suggests viewers can expect a scary and exciting experience.
