The DC Universe, led by James Gunn, is quickly taking shape. Beyond the already announced Supergirl and Clayface films, a Superman sequel is confirmed and scheduled for release. Gunn has finished the first draft of the script, and reports suggest the iconic villain Brainiac will play a key role.
Brainiac May Be Coming To The DCU
For a while, Brainiac was the most likely villain for the next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow. Now, The Wrap reports they’ve confirmed Brainiac is the film’s villain. While the source is generally trustworthy, it’s still uncertain where this information originated, so there could be more to the story.

HBO Max subscriptions begin at $10.99 per month. You can watch James Gunn’s new DC Universe series, including Superman, Season 2 of Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos, all on HBO Max. See the deal here.
It was widely expected that Brainiac would be the primary villain in Man of Tomorrow. When the sequel was announced, the first image released featured Superman and Lex Luthor together, with Lex wearing his iconic power armor from the comics. This initially led fans to believe they might team up to face a larger enemy, a theory James Gunn later confirmed.
When James Gunn shared a look at the first draft of his Man of Tomorrow script, it featured a diagram of a human head with the brain visible. Fans immediately speculated this meant the villain Brainiac would appear in the film, but Gunn hasn’t confirmed anything.
Who Is Brainiac?
Lex Luthor is Superman’s most famous enemy, but Brainiac consistently ranks as his second-biggest threat. Brainiac’s character has changed a lot over the years, like many comic book villains. He’s usually depicted as an alien robot obsessed with collecting knowledge from across the universe. A recurring trait is his habit of capturing entire cities, shrinking them, and displaying them like miniature models.
It’s easy to picture Brainiac arriving on Earth and endangering everyone. This would likely force Superman and Lex Luthor to work together to save the planet, as Brainiac would be a threat to them both. Superman would want to protect people, while Luthor would want to eliminate anyone more powerful than himself.
Brainiac has been a Superman foe in comics, TV shows, books, and video games since 1958, but the new movie will mark his first ever appearance on the big screen. It will be fascinating to see which actor James Gunn chooses to play him.
Everyone expects Brainiac to be the villain in the upcoming movie, Man of Tomorrow. However, we still don’t know exactly what role he’ll play in the story or what the plot will be. Luckily, we won’t have to wait long to find out, as the movie is scheduled to be released in July 2027.
