3 Sci-Fi Sequels So Bad They Almost Ruined The Originals

Science fiction has been a popular part of our culture since its beginnings, captivating audiences for decades. Known for its imaginative and scientifically-based stories, the genre has consistently proven successful in theaters worldwide. Many recent, well-received sci-fi films are turned into franchises – studios create sequels and expand the original story to keep audiences engaged and profit from the initial success. Unfortunately, these follow-up movies aren’t always as good as the first.

While some sci-fi sequels are fantastic, many don’t live up to the original. The best sequels capture what fans loved about the first film, but others miss the mark entirely, resulting in a disappointing follow-up. Occasionally, a truly terrible sequel can even tarnish the reputation of a previously well-regarded movie – simply being connected to a bad film can harm a classic’s legacy.

3) Starship Troopers 2: Hero Of The Federation (2004)

The original Starship Troopers film came out in 1997 and, while it initially divided audiences, it’s now considered one of the best science fiction movies of the 90s. Some viewers missed its subtle commentary on colonialism and American foreign policy, but the film has gained a much better reputation over time with renewed appreciation. Unfortunately, the 2004 sequel, Starship Troopers 2: Hero of the Federation, was so poorly received that it nearly overshadowed the original’s quality before it could truly be recognized.

The second movie shifted away from the original’s sci-fi action, leaning heavily into horror. Many viewers disliked this change, as well as the fact that none of the original actors returned. The first film was praised for its clever and sharp satire, and the sequel lost that quality, proving how even small changes to a successful formula can result in a disappointing follow-up.

2) S. Darko (2009)

Donnie Darko is a truly unique and exceptional sci-fi film that often leaves viewers puzzled. Released in 2001, its complex story and challenging ending immediately captivated audiences and critics, and it remains popular today. A sequel, S. Darko, followed in 2009, focusing on Donnie’s sister Samantha seven years after the events of the first film. However, it’s a largely forgettable sequel – and with good reason, as it’s considered very poor quality.

S. Darko is a disappointing sci-fi sequel. It rehashes the smart and complex ideas of the original movie in a confusing and almost meaningless way, offering a story that’s hard to follow and feels like a shallow copy. Honestly, making a sequel to Donnie Darko was a strange idea to begin with. The first film stands on its own perfectly, and trying to capitalize on its success by continuing the story with a new lead character was a mistake and poorly done.

1) Highlander II: The Quickening (1991)

“Highlander II: The Quickening” is a strange movie, often cited as one of the worst ever made. What makes it particularly unusual is that it dramatically changed genres from the first film. While the original Highlander blended action and fantasy, the sequel leaned heavily into science fiction, though it still used some ideas from the first movie. Highlander II delves deeper into the characters we met originally, expanding their backstories and revealing more about the world of immortals.

This movie is famously awful and very confusing. It quickly undoes much of what happened in the first film, making the sequel feel pointless. Widely considered one of the worst sci-fi movies ever made, it’s a sequel that didn’t improve the original and wasn’t even asked for. It takes the enjoyable parts of the first Highlander and exaggerates them, ultimately damaging the story and the film’s overall appeal by changing things that had already been established.
