Another Shonen Jump Series Is At Risk of Getting Cancelled After Recent Update

2025 has been a difficult year for Weekly Shonen Jump, with several manga being canceled due to declining sales and viewership. Since its launch in 1968, Weekly Shonen Jump (published by Shueisha) has published many legendary series, including Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. It became the best-selling manga magazine ever, and continues to be a leader in the industry with popular titles like Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia that have shaped modern shonen manga. Remarkably, 12 out of the 23 manga series that have sold over 100 million copies originated in Weekly Shonen Jump.

Though a few Weekly Shonen Jump series become legendary, many once-popular shows are eventually forgotten. Less popular series often get cancelled quickly because they don’t perform well. Despite the manga industry’s growth, Weekly Shonen Jump is currently struggling to launch new, major hits like Kagurabachi and Ichi the Witch. This has led to a surprisingly high number of cancellations this year, and another one may be announced soon.

Otr of the Flame Shares Disappointing Sales Update

A recent sales report shows that Yuki Kawaguchi’s Otr of the Flame sold fewer than 3,000 copies during its first week in November. The information comes from @WSJ_manga on X, a well-known source for updates on Shonen Jump manga. Surprisingly, Otr of the Flame‘s sales are even lower than Kaedegami, a fantasy series that was cancelled in October before its first volume could be released. While the sales difference isn’t huge, it’s notable that a cancelled series performed better than a currently running one.

I’ve been following the sales numbers for Otr of the Flame, and it looks like they’ve been declining in Japan after the first two volumes. A third volume is expected next quarter, along with other titles from the WSJ series. It’s a bit concerning, though the account notes that overall sales are down across the board. One Piece is the clear standout, selling over 600,000 copies. While Shueisha isn’t likely to cancel Otr of the Flame immediately, its future probably depends on whether sales improve in the coming weeks.

This fantasy manga has a loyal, though small, following despite having an average score of under 7 on MyAnimeList. It began in May 2025 and currently has 26 chapters available. Although Kawaguchi has created several short stories, this is only their second ongoing series. Their previous serialized work, The Hunters Guild: Red Hood, was published in WSJ in 2021 but was unfortunately cancelled after a short run, with fewer than 25 chapters released.
