Today marks the 18th anniversary of the end of one of Comedy Central’s most outrageous animated series, and now you can watch it for free if you never got the chance. While Comedy Central still offers popular animated shows like South Park, Beavis and Butt-Head, and Digman!, the channel used to feature even more animated favorites. Like many of its hit shows, Comedy Central’s animation often pushed boundaries with its humor and style. But one series remains particularly well-known for taking things a step too far.
Drawn Together was a famously controversial animated show on Comedy Central in the 2000s. It cleverly parodied the reality TV shows popular at the time, while also referencing decades of animation, anime, and pop culture. The show was known for its extremely crude and often shocking humor, but it’s still available to watch online—and it’s completely free!
What Is Drawn Together?
Created by Dave Jeser and Matt Silverstein, the animated series Drawn Together first aired in 2004 and concluded after three seasons on November 14, 2007—exactly 18 years ago today. The show perfectly captures the early 2000s vibe, taking inspiration from the reality show The Surreal Life—where celebrities lived together—and reimagining it as an animated crossover. Its characters are based on well-known figures from pop culture, including Disney Princesses, Betty Boop, Josie and the Pussycats, Pokemon, SpongeBob SquarePants, and many others, all presented with exaggerated humor.
The show was known for its edgy and often crude humor, filled with jokes, suggestive themes, and violence. Despite pushing boundaries, it managed to strike a funny balance. Some of the jokes haven’t held up over time, but that reflects the cultural climate of the early 2000s, which favored irony over sincerity. Ultimately, the creators acknowledged that their approach was a commentary on the world of animation itself.
What Happened to Drawn Together?
Given how edgy and controversial it was, Drawn Together wasn’t likely to last long on Comedy Central. It managed a respectable three seasons and even received a proper conclusion with the direct-to-DVD movie, The Drawn Together Movie: The Movie!, which was released three years after the show ended. This allowed the creators to finish the series as they intended and provide a satisfying ending to the show’s outrageous humor.
This show was truly a product of its time, making a reboot or revival unlikely – unlike what’s happened with other animated series from that era.
