Amazon Prime Video has cancelled The Wheel of Time after its third season finished airing in April. While renewal discussions were complex, the decision came down to cost. The show was expensive to produce, and Amazon was looking to reduce spending. Although the cancellation was announced, there was some hope that another streaming service might pick up the series.
Rosamund Pike, who starred in The Wheel of Time, recently discussed the show’s cancellation with Collider. She explained that several factors contributed to the show’s difficulties, including fan criticism of the first season. Pike admitted she largely agreed with the criticism and cited challenges like COVID-19 outbreaks during filming and changes in key crew members as contributing problems.
The actress believes the show significantly improved with each season, hitting its stride in Season 3. She described it as a well-crafted and compelling series that drew talented actors for smaller roles. She feels that if the show had started with that same level of quality in Season 1, it might not have been canceled, suggesting the network simply wanted to move on to new projects.
It appears Rosamund Pike believes the series is finished and won’t be revived. While she’d love another studio to step in – noting the show has a talented team and potential for a strong conclusion – she acknowledges it’s likely time to move on. She suggests they’ve figured out how to adapt the remaining books, but ultimately feels it’s best to accept the show is over.
The Wheel of Time Fans Have to Accept That It Is Over
I’m really worried, but Rosamund Pike seems to be right – it’s looking like The Wheel of Time might not get another season. Streaming is changing, and all the services are trying to save money by making fewer original shows. The Wheel of Time was a really expensive show to make, and honestly, while the books are incredibly popular, it doesn’t have the same level of recognition as something like Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. Those shows already have a huge built-in audience, which makes it easier to justify the costs, but The Wheel of Time just doesn’t quite have that same media presence yet, and I fear that’s hurting its chances.
Despite the show’s popularity, viewership on Prime Video wasn’t high enough to justify another season. While fans were very active online, the overall numbers didn’t meet Prime Video’s renewal criteria. Netflix is the only other streamer capable of handling a project of this scale, but they’re already committed to many shows. Ultimately, fans should appreciate the three seasons they did receive, especially since two of them were exceptionally well-made, and that may be all there will be.
It’s unlikely other streaming services or networks will pick up the show. Disney+ is currently reducing its content, even for major franchises like Marvel and Star Wars, and HBO Max is undergoing changes, making it an uncertain option. Traditional networks probably wouldn’t invest in it either. If Amazon doesn’t believe The Wheel of Time can continue to succeed, it might be best to pause the series for now and potentially reconsider it in the future.
