When Ghost Machine announced its new comic book universe, starting with titles like Rook: Exodus, Geiger, and Redcoat, fans were thrilled by the variety of stories and ideas. The universe has proven successful, and now Geoff Johns’ Redcoat is being adapted into a movie with ties to the DC Extended Universe.
Deadline reported that Atlas Entertainment and Ghost Machine are teaming up to make a movie based on the popular Image Comics series, Redcoat. Geoff Johns will write the screenplay, drawing from a story he created with the comic’s artist, Bryan Hitch. Alex Gartner and Charles Roven will produce the film for Atlas Entertainment. Roven has a history of working with Johns on DC films and has also been a producer on many previous movies in the DC Extended Universe.
Richard Roven collaborated with Jon Berg on the film Wonder Woman, and has been involved in many other DC movies, including The Suicide Squad, Justice League, Wonder Woman 1984, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, and Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The only DC films from that period he didn’t work on were The Flash, the Aquaman films, Birds of Prey, and Black Adam. He hasn’t worked with Berg since Wonder Woman 1984.
Redcoat is vastly different from Wonder Woman and Justice League in both its story and overall feel. The comic centers on a British soldier who runs away from the army and unexpectedly gains immortality during the American Revolution. As he lives through the centuries, he’s eventually forced to confront his past actions when he becomes involved in a hidden plot to harm the United States.
I’ve worked with Geoff Johns for a long time and have seen firsthand how talented he is, especially with DC Comics. He and artist Bryan Hitch make a fantastic team on the Redcoat comics, which are incredibly popular with fans. Roven believes Redcoat is a truly original series with the potential to become a major franchise.
According to Gartner, strong characters are the foundation of any successful franchise, and Simon Pure from Redcoat is a prime example. He’s a funny, charming, and endearing scoundrel who truly makes the franchise work.
While details like release dates and the cast for Redcoat haven’t been announced yet, the story idea is really interesting. With the right approach, it could become a popular movie series. If you’re interested in learning more, Redcoat Vol. 1 is available now in comic shops and online.
