Disney’s Most Underrated ‘90s Movie is Finally Getting a Follow Up (And Sooner Than You Think)

Many Disney fans consider The Rocketeer a hidden gem from the 1990s. Though the 1991 live-action film wasn’t a huge commercial success, it gained a dedicated following thanks to its source material – a popular superhero created by Dave Stevens in a series of comics. For years, fans have hoped for a sequel or continuation of The Rocketeer‘s story, and while a reboot has been discussed, something new is finally in the works – though it won’t be quite what everyone anticipated.

IDW is bringing back The Rocketeer with a new adventure! “The Rocketeer: The Island” will launch in February 2026. The story is based on an unpublished outline by the original creator, who passed away in 2008, and promises to be the most exciting chapter yet for fans of the classic Disney movie and hero.

The Rocketeer Is Off to Save Amelia Earhart in New Adventure

IDW’s new comic, The Rocketeer: The Island, takes readers back to 1938. It features Cliff Secord, also known as The Rocketeer, on a mission to find Amelia Earhart, who vanished in 1937 while trying to circumnavigate the globe. What starts as a rescue operation quickly leads him to a strange and surprising island. The comic is written by John Layman (known for Titans and Chew), with art by Jacob Edgar (Plastic Man No More!, Batman: The Adventures Continue), and colors by K.J. Diaz (Amazing Spider-Man, Blade).

Layman shared his excitement about the ‘Rocketeer’ project, which has been in development for several months. He’s thoroughly enjoying seeing the pages come together, describing working in David Stevens’ charming, funny, and action-packed world as a real pleasure. Layman considers Stevens a masterful artist and ‘Rocketeer’ a timeless comic book character – a longtime personal favorite. He’s grateful to IDW, a publisher he loves working with, for giving him this opportunity to both get paid and contribute to a hero he admires, in a world he’s cherished for decades. He also praised the incredible artwork and colors by Jacob Edgar and K.J. Diaz, calling them a perfect fit for the comic.

Edgar expressed how thrilled he is to be working on The Rocketeer, calling it an honor to contribute to such an iconic character. He noted the high artistic standard set by previous creators like Dave Stevens, Chris Samnee, and Darwyn Cooke, feeling that Cliff Secord consistently attracts top talent. Edgar is excited about the direction John is taking the story and loves collaborating with colorist KJ Diaz. He admitted he never expected to work on The Rocketeer, but is thoroughly enjoying the process and hopes that enthusiasm shines through in the artwork.

Fans Have Been Waiting for More The Rocketeer (And This Could Lead to It)

Although the original Rocketeer movie didn’t do well in cinemas, the story hasn’t ended. While a sequel was initially cancelled, the character has continued in other forms. A TV series, ‘Rocketeer,’ premiered on Disney Junior in 2019, focusing on Kit Secord, the great-granddaughter of the original hero, who inherits the jetpack and becomes a hero herself. The Rocketeer’s adventures have also continued in comic books, and now IDW is bringing the character back for a new series.

Although a new Rocketeer movie hasn’t moved forward recently, a new comic book story is being released. If this comic, The Rocketeer: The Island, does well, it could create enough excitement to revive plans for a sequel, particularly since audiences are currently enjoying nostalgic entertainment.

The Rocketeer: The Island #1 goes on sale in February from IDW.
