Last night’s WWE SmackDown was full of action, even though it was a shorter, two-hour show. It will soon return to its usual three-hour length, but for now, let’s recap what happened. The show covered a lot of storylines, with some parts working better than others. We’ll start with the very beginning of the night.
6. Miss: Charlotte Flair’s Rhea Ripley Issue
The first part of the night focused on the Women’s WarGames match at Survivor Series. Instead of a clear win for the team, it resulted in one member dropping out. Charlotte Flair announced she wouldn’t team with Rhea Ripley because of their past issues, and while she supports Alexa Bliss, she won’t be participating.
The problem wasn’t the storyline itself, but how it was presented. Looking back at the rivalry between Rhea Ripley and Charlotte Flair, Ripley was usually the fan favorite, and Flair positioned herself as someone questioning Ripley’s readiness to be a champion. So, it felt strange to hear Flair accuse Ripley of being untrustworthy, because that’s something Ripley would typically say about Flair. It’s also confusing since Ripley seems perfectly happy to work with Flair. While Flair will probably end up joining the team, this whole situation felt unnecessary and doesn’t really benefit either wrestler.
5. Hit: Dragunov & Axiom Burn The House Down
As a huge fan, I’ve been following Ilja Dragunov’s run with the WWE United States Championship, and his latest defense against Axiom was another intense battle! Honestly, it was a fantastic match – the clash of their different styles just worked. And poor Tommaso Ciampa looked absolutely livid about it all! Dragunov’s been on a roll since winning the title, and I really don’t see anyone taking it from him anytime soon. He’s just too good right now.
4. Hit: Sami Zayn’s Back In Action
It’s always great to see a wrestler return after being injured, and tonight we found out Sami Zayn is finally healthy enough to compete. He revealed he’d been cleared in a surprising way, letting Solo Sikoa make a threat before announcing his plan for a match. With several wrestlers currently injured across SmackDown, Raw, and NXT, any return is welcome, and Zayn is a particularly valuable addition. It’s good to have him back, even though the current storylines don’t feel very convincing.
3. Miss: John Cena’s Tournament Winners
The competition to determine John Cena’s last opponent is happening now, and SmackDown hosted the next two qualifying matches. First up was The Miz against Jey Uso. Given their past rivalry, many expected The Miz to win, and Jey’s victory was a real surprise. While Jey is a great competitor, The Miz just seemed like the more logical choice to face Cena.
The second match was another surprising outcome. Even with a beloved wrestler returning, they couldn’t secure the win – LA Knight did. It’s not a criticism of Knight, as he actually has a history with Cena too, but it’s strange to see a highly anticipated return overshadowed by a loss, particularly considering the returning wrestler’s deeper connection with Cena and how well they would have fit into the storyline.
2. Hit: The Ryder Returns
Zack Ryder, also known as Matt Cardona, recently returned to WWE on SmackDown after a five-year absence. He received a great reaction from the crowd and put up a strong fight against Knight – it wasn’t a one-sided match. While it would have been fantastic to see Cardona win his return match, it’s understandable WWE wants to protect Knight. Perhaps a different opponent would have been a better choice. Despite not winning, Ryder seemed comfortable and well-received by the fans, making his return a success.
1. Hit: McIntyre’s Change Of Luck
Let’s finish up by talking about a positive turn of events for WWE star Drew McIntyre, who’s been facing challenges recently and is currently suspended. Tonight, things changed thanks to Paul Heyman’s clever planning. Heyman managed to get McIntyre back into action and positioned to help ‘The Vision’ at the WarGames event.
Adding Drew McIntyre to this match not only makes it more exciting, but also ensures a popular WWE performer has a prominent role. He’s a perfect fit for a villainous team, and now fans will get to see his skills on display at Survivor Series.
