The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Confirms It’s Pulling From Even More Games in the Series (And We Can’t Wait)

Sonic and Mario are often considered the biggest rivals in video game history. Whatever Nintendo does with Mario, Sega usually tries to do something even better with Sonic. This competition extends beyond just the games themselves. After the first Sonic movie did well, Nintendo quickly started working on an animated Mario movie. That movie became a huge global hit, earning over $1.3 billion. A sequel was immediately planned, and although details were slow to emerge, it promises to be worth the wait.

The next Super Mario Bros. Movie will be based on Super Mario Galaxy, a beloved game where Mario ventures beyond the Mushroom Kingdom to save multiple worlds. The trailer reveals that Bowser Jr. will appear in the film, and he’ll be opposed by Princess Rosalina, a popular character who will also make her debut.

It’s easy to get caught up in Princess Peach’s action and Mario’s standoff with Bowser, but the trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie also shows glimpses of the different galaxies the characters will visit, like Drip Drop Galaxy. Interestingly, one location shown isn’t from a Super Mario Galaxy game at all – it’s actually from another game fans expected to see adapted into a movie.

The trailer for the new Super Mario movie showed Mario and Luigi riding dirtbikes through a desert and past an upside-down pyramid. A recently released poster confirms this location is actually Tostarena from Super Mario Odyssey, and its inhabitants, the Tostarenans, are also featured. It’s unusual for a movie based on a game with so many different worlds to include a location from another game, but Nintendo likely has a good reason for making this choice.

Nintendo Might Have Something Bigger in Mind Than a Super Mario Odyssey Movie

While another movie based on Super Mario Odyssey might be fun, it would retell a story we’ve seen before – Bowser kidnapping Peach. By including ideas from Odyssey in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo can open up more possibilities for future films.

As a huge Nintendo fan, I’m really hoping we get a Super Smash Bros. movie! It feels like they’re building towards it, especially since so many characters from those games showed up in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The sequel seems like the perfect place to add even more, and while Nintendo hasn’t officially said anything, it’s hard not to think they’re laying the groundwork for the ultimate crossover movie!

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters on April 3, 2026.
