Amazon MGM is working on the 26th James Bond film, and it’s likely to be a turning point for the series. Things have been uncertain since Daniel Craig retired from the role, especially after Amazon’s acquisition of the franchise from the Broccoli family, who originally held the rights. Combined with reported difficulties during the transition and the fact that James Bond died in the last film, No Time To Die, the next installment is shaping up to be a significant departure for the iconic 007.
It’s not surprising that the next James Bond film is taking so long to come together. It’s been four years since No Time to Die was released, and even though Denis Villeneuve is directing and Stephen Knight is writing, production hasn’t started. They still don’t have a completed script or a new actor to play 007, despite a lot of rumors. This likely means the gap between this film and No Time to Die will be the longest in Bond history, surpassing the current record of six years and four months between Licence to Kill and GoldenEye. The wait between Spectre and No Time to Die was almost as long, at just under six years.
James Bond 26 Taking A Long Time Is Good For 007’s Future

To prevent another delay, the next James Bond film would need to come out by early 2028. While not out of the question, that seems unlikely at the moment, especially considering Denis Villeneuve is currently occupied with Dune: Part Three. Although filming has finished, the movie still needs extensive editing, potential reshoots, and a large promotional campaign. Recent reports suggest a 2028 release is more realistic, and if so, it will probably be in October or November—Bond films almost always come out around that time. The last time a Bond movie tried to launch during the summer blockbuster season was with Licence to Kill in 1989.
The break between Bond films isn’t necessarily a negative, and actually suggests a thoughtful approach. Just like GoldenEye successfully rebooted the franchise, No Time To Die was a clear step up from Spectre, providing a fitting conclusion to Daniel Craig’s portrayal of the character. Considering this is a particularly significant period of transition for James Bond, it’s encouraging that those involved aren’t hurrying the process. They’re taking the time needed to develop a strong story, cast the perfect actor, and ultimately create the best possible Bond film.
Honestly, one of my biggest worries about the future of Bond was Amazon potentially overdoing it – turning it into a never-ending stream of prequels and spin-offs now that the Broccoli family isn’t fully in charge. While I’m sure we’ll still see plenty of related content, I’m feeling a lot better knowing they’re prioritizing the big-screen experience. And hiring a director as talented as this? That’s a fantastic sign. It suggests James Bond 26 will be a worthy continuation of the series and, ultimately, worth the wait.
