The story of Demon Slayer begins with a devastating tragedy: the murder of Tanjiro’s entire family while he was away. When he returned home, he found only his sister Nezuko alive, but she had been turned into a demon. While seeking help in a nearby town, Tanjiro encountered Giyu Tomioka, a demon hunter who intended to kill Nezuko, believing she would eventually harm humans. Tanjiro desperately tried to convince Giyu that Nezuko was different, and Giyu finally started to believe him when he saw Nezuko fiercely protect her injured brother, Tanjiro, even though she had lost her humanity and was weakened by her transformation.
Seeing how determined the siblings were gave Giyu a glimmer of hope, as he felt they weren’t like the other demons. He began training Tanjiro to become a Demon Slayer, and the story follows his journey as he faces increasingly strong opponents and works towards finding a way to turn Nezuko back into a human. While Nezuko is the heart of the series, the story could have explored her character even more deeply.
Nezuko’s Character in Demon Slayer Wasn’t Explored As Much As It Should’ve

He started his adventure to save his sister, and the only way to do that was by hunting demons. Nezuko traveled with him, mostly sleeping to recover her strength. Despite being a key character, Nezuko’s role felt underdeveloped. She had the potential to be as strong as the most powerful demons, but after overcoming her weakness to sunlight, she rarely participated in fights. Instead, she spent most of the story asleep, slowly regaining her humanity.
The manga didn’t quite succeed in showing Nezuko’s inner life or the difficulties she experienced becoming human again. While some fans might be disappointed she doesn’t fight demons, the bigger issue is that we never get to see things from her perspective – her thoughts and feelings are largely unexplored. She returns after the Sunrise Countdown Arc, but only to assist Tanjiro. With the manga complete and the anime nearing its end, there’s no opportunity to revise how her character is presented.
