The House in IT: Welcome to Derry Episode 4’s Ending, Explained (& Why It’s So Important)

The fourth episode of IT: Welcome to Derry ends with a creepy hint about a house, suggesting Pennywise the Dancing Clown will soon be fully revealed. While the show has shown other forms of ‘It,’ Bill Skarsgård’s clown has mostly stayed hidden, appearing only in brief shadows and with a few floating red balloons. But that’s about to change. (Spoiler alert for Episode 4!)

This new story dramatically expands the mythology of Stephen King’s ‘It,’ offering a fresh origin for Pennywise. The story still features the creature arriving on Earth via a meteor, but it adds that Pennywise first interacted with the native people of Derry, well before the town was settled. These natives discovered they could use fragments of the meteor to create pillars that trapped the creature within a specific area, explaining why it can’t leave Derry. Later, when Dick Hallorann asks about the location of these pillars, Taniel explains they’re hidden along underground lines beneath an old well, leading them to a rundown house on Neibolt Street.

The House on Neibolt Street Means Pennywise Is About To Appear

The house on Neibolt Street – famously called the Well House – comes directly from Stephen King’s novel IT, and played a significant part in Andy Muschietti’s IT films (which Welcome to Derry builds upon, not the original book). It’s where the Losers Club first battles Pennywise, and it serves as the main entrance to the creature’s hidden lair. Pennywise doesn’t actually live in the house, but it’s through the old well on the property that you can reach his dwelling.

As a film enthusiast, one of the things that really struck me about IT (2017) is how cleverly the filmmakers used the town’s sewer system. Bill Denbrough points out that all the major, terrible events – like Georgie’s disappearance, and the happenings at the Ironworks and the Black Spot – are linked by these sewers. They all converge at one specific place: the Well House on Neibolt Street. It’s not just a recent connection either; the history of that place goes way back, being where the very first people taken by ‘It’ vanished. It’s a chilling realization that the evil has been centered there for a very long time.

The house has a mysterious history, and it’s likely that Pennywise living beneath it caused it to fall into ruin and remain empty. Now, it looks like we’ll find out more about the house and its secrets, as Dick will have to enter the building to investigate It.

We’re expecting the most intense confrontation with Pennywise yet in the upcoming IT: Welcome to Derry. However, things probably won’t end well for the characters, as the house where Pennywise resides remains standing throughout the IT films, only being destroyed when the Losers finally defeat him. The house will likely continue to be a key location in future seasons of the show, connecting the different storylines. The mention of the 1908 “Ironworks” explosion – a factory incident – suggests where Season 3 will be set, if the show gets renewed, meaning there’s much more of the story to tell.

New episodes of IT: Welcome to Derry release on Sundays at 9pm on HBO and HBO Max.
