Marvel Studios has decided to skip a major movie release in 2027, and I think that’s a misstep for the franchise. The plans for the current Multiverse Saga have shifted frequently, especially with the addition of many new shows on Disney+ leading to more releases in some years.
Following some disappointing releases and increased criticism, Marvel has scaled back its production plans. After releasing only one movie in 2024, and despite plans for three in 2025, the studio will continue to release fewer films in the coming years. This includes the cancellation of a significant movie originally scheduled for 2027.
Marvel Studios’ Slate Is Now Missing 1 Movie
Over the last few years, Marvel’s movie plans have changed a lot, first due to the pandemic and more recently because of a slowdown in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali was taken off the schedule with no new release date, and big films like the next two Avengers movies have been pushed back several times. This has also resulted in Marvel canceling several unnamed movies that were originally planned.
In 2026, Marvel will release two movies: Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st, and the next Avengers film, Avengers: Doomsday, on December 18th. Before Avengers: Secret Wars arrives on December 17, 2027, another Marvel movie, currently without a title, is scheduled for release on July 23, 2027.
Marvel Studios has removed a planned movie from its 2027 schedule. That date will now be used for the sequel to The Simpsons Movie, which is scheduled to hit theaters on July 23, 2027. Although the canceled Marvel movie’s topic remains unknown, it was expected to be a significant part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Why The MCU’s Cancelled 2027 Movie Would Have Been Important No Matter What It Was
Due to changes in Marvel’s movie schedule, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will now come out before Avengers: Doomsday. This means a previously canceled 2027 movie would have been Marvel’s only release between Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Now, there isn’t a movie planned to connect those two Avengers films.
Considering the ‘Secret Wars’ comic book story, it’s likely that the upcoming Marvel movie will depict Doctor Doom winning and forming Battleworld. Originally, a planned 2027 movie would have been ideal for fully exploring this new world and featuring characters who wouldn’t have fit into the crowded ‘Avengers: Secret Wars’ film. Now, the current Avengers movie has a significant challenge ahead to establish everything within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
