Jurassic World 5 Using a Scrapped Jurassic Park 4 Idea Is More Plausible Than Ever

The original script for a fourth Jurassic Park movie was abandoned, but some of its ideas might now appear in the upcoming Jurassic World sequel. The story began with Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film, Jurassic Park, which explored the idea of bringing dinosaurs back to life. This concept continues to provide great stories, and the Jurassic franchise remains popular, with a total of seven films released so far – three Jurassic Park movies and four Jurassic World films – and another one already planned.

The original Jurassic Park (1993) and its sequels, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001), followed scientists Alan Grant, Ian Malcolm, and Ellie Sattler as they encountered dinosaurs brought back to life on a remote island by John Hammond’s company, InGen. Despite the resulting chaos, the idea of a dinosaur theme park persisted, leading to Jurassic World (2015). The franchise continued with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), Jurassic World Dominion (2022), and the upcoming Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), exploring new directions. Interestingly, an early idea for a fourth Jurassic Park film would have dramatically altered the entire story.

John Sayles’ Unrealized Jurassic Park 4 Included Human/Dinosaur Hybrids

Following the events in Jurassic Park III, where the military went to Isla Nublar and pteranodons escaped, a sequel script was written by John Sayles that envisioned dinosaurs spreading across the globe. Sayles, known for films like Piranha and Battle Beyond the Stars, developed ideas for Jurassic Park 4 that included a controversial concept: human-dinosaur hybrids. Since the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were already created by combining dinosaur DNA with frog DNA, adding human DNA wouldn’t have been a huge leap.

As a huge fan of the Jurassic Park films, I remember reading about some really wild early script ideas. Apparently, they initially planned to give soldiers dinosaur DNA, essentially turning them into dinos! Thankfully, even back in the early 2000s, everyone realized that was just too far-fetched for the series. Jurassic Park III felt like a good ending to the original trilogy, and introducing something that crazy would have totally undermined everything they’d built. I actually recall Steven Spielberg wanting human-dinosaur hybrids for Jurassic Park III originally. Now, with Jurassic World Rebirth on the way, it feels like they might finally be able to explore that idea – and honestly, I’m kind of excited to see how they pull it off!

Jurassic World Rebirth Actually Set Up Human/Dinosaur Hybrids Perfectly

I was so excited when Gareth Edwards – the director behind films like Monsters, Godzilla, and Rogue One – signed on to direct a new Jurassic movie! The last one, Jurassic World Dominion, hadn’t been great, so it felt like a real boost for the series. His film, Jurassic World Rebirth, has an amazing cast and tells a pretty self-contained story. It follows a team of mercenaries and a paleontologist named Henry Loomis, played by Jonathan Bailey, who sneak onto Île Saint-Hubert to illegally collect DNA from three specific dinosaurs. The really interesting part is they believe this dinosaur DNA could be used to create a groundbreaking treatment for heart disease – basically, they’re hoping to inject it into people!

Interestingly, this concept unintentionally creates a pathway to realize John Sayles’ original, more realistic vision for a Jurassic Park movie. The idea of injecting humans with dinosaur DNA – specifically from creatures like mosasaurs, titanosaurs, and quetzalcoatluses – could lead to fascinating and potentially unsettling changes in the subjects, giving them dinosaur-like traits. If this story stays grounded, feels somewhat realistic, and maintains the darker tone of Jurassic World Rebirth, it could be very effective. The fact that Rebirth’s sequel is happening with the same creative team makes this a particularly promising development.

Jurassic World 5 Could Be the Weirdest Jurassic Park Project Yet

Industry insider Jeff Sneider recently reported in his newsletter that a follow-up to Jurassic World Rebirth is in the works. Director Gareth Edwards and his team are close to signing on to return, and Scarlett Johansson, Mahershala Ali, and Jonathan Bailey are expected to reprise their roles from Rebirth, having survived the events on Île Saint-Hubert. Rebirth was considered a step up from previous Jurassic World films, making the potential return of this cast and crew exciting – they might be the only ones who could make such a wild story feel realistic.

In Jurassic World Rebirth, Henry Loomis brought dinosaur DNA back to the mainland. Then, Fallen Kingdom saw dinosaurs released globally. This makes it likely that a company – whether military or focused on genetics – could obtain dinosaur DNA. The possibility of medical applications might explain why it’s being experimented with on humans. While we don’t know what will happen, this could lead to the wildest Jurassic story yet, and honestly, we’re hoping it does!
