After just two weeks, Predator: Badlands is proving to be a successful addition to the Predator series, bringing in $136.3 million worldwide. In the United States alone, the film has earned $66 million, which is a new record for the franchise. Predator: Badlands has now outperformed the original Predator movie’s domestic earnings of $59 million, making it the highest-grossing Predator film in the US. However, it still needs to earn more to surpass the Alien vs. Predator movies, which made $80.2 million domestically.
Focusing solely on the Predator movies, Badlands has outperformed Predators ($52 million) and The Predator ($51 million), which were previous attempts to revive the series. While Predator: Badlands is director Dan Trachtenberg’s third film in the Predator universe, his earlier two, Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, were released directly to streaming, so they didn’t have box office numbers. Many fans believe that if Prey had been shown in theaters, Trachtenberg’s box office success would be even greater than what he’s currently achieving with Predator: Badlands.
Despite a strong start, Predator: Badlands didn’t stay at the top of the box office for a second week. Now You See Me: Now You Don’t and Edgar Wright’s new version of Running Man claimed the first and second spots, respectively. Badlands experienced a significant drop in ticket sales – down 68% – earning $13 million compared to its $40 million debut. While the film hasn’t performed as well as hoped in some international markets like Japan, positive reviews and word-of-mouth are starting to build for Predator: Badlands.
Currently, audiences on Rotten Tomatoes are really enjoying the film, giving it a 95% rating. This is higher than the audience scores for Now You See Me 3 (81%) and Running Man (79%). As people plan their Thanksgiving movie trips—and if they’re looking for something besides Wicked: For Good—Predator: Badlands is looking like a great choice, backed up by a solid 85% score from critics.
No matter how successful it becomes or how many more goals it reaches, Predator: Badlands has already proven its worth to the franchise. It’s demonstrated that movies can still thrive in theaters, just as much as on streaming services. With Alien also making a comeback, and Badlands potentially combining these two iconic universes, the future looks promising—and violent—for Predator.
Predator: Badlands is now playing in theaters.
