Princess Beatrice Details “Lonely” Preterm Birth Experience

Princess Beatrice is reflecting on her little Queen’s early arrival.

Nearly nine months after Princess Beatrice and her husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, welcomed their second daughter, Athena Elizabeth Rose – who arrived a few weeks early in January – the royal has spoken about the challenges premature births can bring to new mothers.

Beatrice, 37, shared on the November 17th episode of The Borne Podcast that mothers often feel pressured to be perfect. She explained that finding out your baby will arrive prematurely can be a particularly isolating experience.

Keeping her own experiences in mind, the philanthropist began supporting Borne, a charity dedicated to preventing premature birth, in March. Since then, Beatrice – who is also a stepmother to 9-year-old Christopher and mother to 4-year-old Sienna Elizabeth Mozzi – has said that her involvement has inspired other mothers to feel proud of their individual birth stories.

She explained in the podcast that people feel a huge sense of relief knowing there’s an organization dedicated to research and answering questions. She also shared that being a mom feels like being part of a special group where everyone shares their experiences.

Beatrice added that she appreciates Borne being there for people during very difficult times, and emphasized the need to equip excellent doctors and provide them with the best resources so that no mother feels isolated.

I’ve been so impressed watching Beatrice speak out. It really resonated with me when she shared about her second pregnancy back in March. She was so honest about being really scared when the routine scans showed that little Athena was going to come early – she admitted to feeling completely overwhelmed by the uncertainty of it all, and I think a lot of parents can relate to that.

She shared in a personal essay for British Vogue that the experience was a powerful reminder of both how much we do and don’t know about the human body. Despite careful planning, she realized that pregnancy often unfolds in unexpected ways, guided by what her body – or her baby – needs.

Beatrice and her husband, married in July 2020, received significant support as they became parents. She explained that she was carefully monitored by doctors and feels very fortunate to have had their consistent care and support throughout the process.

“Athena was born healthy, a little early—a few weeks before her due date,” she said. “She was so small that it took weeks for us to fully relax and truly believe we had a healthy baby.”
