Though the 1991 film didn’t succeed at the box office, the classic hero The Rocketeer – who first appeared in comics in 1982 – is making a comeback! Despite positive reviews and a dedicated fanbase, the movie underperformed, and after the original creator’s passing, new Rocketeer comics became rare. Now, IDW Publishing is bringing the high-flying hero back with a brand-new comic series and a thrilling new adventure.
IDW Publishing is bringing back the classic hero The Rocketeer in a new series called The Rocketeer: The Island next February. Based on ideas from the late Dan Stevens, the comic will be written by John Layman and Jacob Edgar, with art by K.J. Díaz. The story takes place in the 1930s and follows The Rocketeer as he attempts to rescue Amelia Earhart, but finds himself stranded on a mysterious island with dangerous challenges. Both Layman and Edgar have said they are thrilled to be working on this project, calling it a lot of fun.
The Rocketeer Soars to New Heights in New Series Next Year

I never loved The Rocketeer, but I recognize it faced some tough challenges. The comic series was good, and the movie stayed true to the feel of the original comics. However, its nostalgic look back at the Golden Age of comics wasn’t very popular with most people at the time – and it’s become even harder to connect with as time passes. Still, a dedicated fanbase loves The Rocketeer and has been hoping for new stories.
IDW Publishing has been fantastic for fans of The Rocketeer, consistently releasing special issues and collections since 2011. While it’s been a few years since the hero’s last comic appearance – the last one was in 2023 with The Rocketeer One-Shot #1 – fans are finally getting a new adventure after about three years. The idea of Rocketeer trying to save one of history’s most celebrated pilots is a really strong story that perfectly captures the classic, action-packed spirit of the character.
It’s great when classic characters get a second life. While a disappointing movie performance can make future films difficult, the Rocketeer will continue to soar in comic books – where his adventures began years ago. Many talented creators are eager to tell a story that does the character justice. Though a return to the big screen isn’t likely soon, the Rocketeer isn’t finished yet, and fans will be able to see him in action again on February 25, 2026.
