Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of Heat, the classic crime film directed by Michael Mann and starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino – famously their first time acting together. Although Heat remains a great film on its own, Michael Mann expanded the story in 2022 with a novel called Heat 2, co-written with Meg Gardiner. Now, a movie adaptation of that sequel is in the works, and recent news suggests Leonardo DiCaprio will be joined by another actor who previously worked with director Christopher Nolan.
Just over a month after Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists took over the Heat 2 movie from Warner Bros., Deadline reports that Christian Bale is being considered for a significant role. While Leonardo DiCaprio is expected to play Chris Shiherlis – a character Val Kilmer famously portrayed in the original Heat – it’s currently unknown who Bale would play. Production for Heat 2 is scheduled to start next year, so we should find out if Bale joins the cast soon.
Similar to The Godfather: Part II, Heat 2 tells a story that jumps between the past and the future. Part of the film is a prequel, set in 1988, showing Shiherlis, Neil McCauley, and their crew pulling off robberies in Chicago while Detective Vincent Hanna investigates a different, dangerous group in the same city. The other part is a sequel, taking place between 1995 and 2000, and follows Shiherlis as he tries to stay hidden from the police after the events of the original Heat movie.
Considering everything, and if the deal goes through, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Christian Bale take on the roles of either McCauley or Hanna in Heat 2 – the characters originally played by Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. Those parts would be a good fit for an actor of his talent. If Leonardo DiCaprio plays Chris Shiherlis across both timelines, as rumored, he and Bale would share scenes if Bale is cast as McCauley. Both Bale and DiCaprio have strong connections to director Christopher Nolan – Bale through the Dark Knight trilogy and The Prestige, and DiCaprio with Inception.
It’s also possible Christian Bale could play one of the new characters in Heat 2. Either way, I’m really looking forward to seeing him and Leonardo DiCaprio act together. Both are Oscar winners – Bale for The Fighter and DiCaprio for The Revenant – and their combined talent is sure to create something special on screen.
While we’re still waiting to hear if Christian Bale will be in Heat 2, his next role will be as Frankenstein’s monster in The Bride, a movie with a similar feel to Bonnie and Clyde. Leonardo DiCaprio’s latest film, One Battle After Another, is now available to rent or buy online.
