Pedro Pascal’s Most Divisive 2025 Movie Becomes Instant Streaming Success (Beating Another of His Own Films)

Wow, 2025 was seriously Pedro Pascal’s year! As a huge fan, I was thrilled to see him back as Joel in The Last of Us Season 2 – and deservedly nominated for another Emmy. But that was just the tip of the iceberg! He jumped into the Marvel universe as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which I’m already counting down the days for the sequel, Avengers: Doomsday. And somehow, he also found time for Freaky Tales, a special appearance on Saturday Night Live‘s 50th anniversary, and the comedy The Uninvited. The guy is a machine!

It’s been wild seeing Pedro Pascal everywhere lately! It’s almost like he’s competing with himself, with all his projects finally hitting streaming services as people have time over the holidays to catch up. I was so excited when Materialists, his movie with A24, became the most popular thing on HBO Max. But then, Eddington came out – it’s definitely his most talked-about film of the year, and it quickly took the top spot! It’s amazing, but a little funny, to see him up against himself like that.

Pedro Pascal’s Controversial 2025 Movie Tops Streaming Charts

Okay, so as a total movie fanatic, I’ve been keeping tabs on what everyone’s watching, and according to FlixPatrol – they track streaming numbers globally – Ari Aster’s new film Eddington, starring Pedro Pascal, has absolutely exploded onto HBO Max. It only dropped last Friday, November 14th, and it instantly shot to number one! It’s been the most-watched movie on HBO Max here in the US for the last three days, which is pretty incredible.

Pascal’s new film, Eddington, has become so popular that it’s knocked his other movie, Materialists, off the top spot on HBO Max. Materialists, which stars Dakota Johnson and Chris Evans, was the most-watched film for over a week before Eddington premiered. Since its release, Materialists has dropped in the rankings, falling from #2 to as low as #4.

Despite being the most popular show on HBO Max in the US, Eddington isn’t making much of an impact worldwide. It doesn’t even appear in the platform’s global top 10, and that’s largely because it’s only available in the United States. The top films globally on HBO Max are typically those fully owned by Warner Bros., such as Weapons (released in 2025) and recent successes like Wicked, which is gaining popularity even before its sequel, Wicked: For Good, is released.

It’s somewhat unexpected that Eddington has done so well, especially considering its provocative content. The film is set during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic and satirizes various topics, particularly conspiracy theories. Its sharp humor, combined with many viewers potentially wanting to avoid reliving that difficult time, makes its continued success a surprise.
